Chip shop in Maldon
« on: Sunday 06 January 08 14:30 GMT (UK) »

Hello all,

I know we aren't meant to discuss living people, but I think the chances of the people I'm looking for being alive are very slim...

I've just been having lunch with my mum and she mentioned that she used to go to Maldon with her family to go and see her mum's cousin.  All she can tell me is that he was called 'Jum' (nickname I hope!) and his wife was called Doris.  He was about the same age as my nanna (1918) or a bit younger.  They used to run a fish and chip shop in Maldon.  I'm guessing this would have been around the late 1940s/1950s.  I was just wondering if anyone resides in Maldon who might know any older members of the community who may remember this chip shop and Jum?  I think his surname may have been Warner.  I'm just looking to make the connection!

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards, Emma Wink

Hi Emma,

Have you had a look at the old telephone directories on www.ancestry.co.uk?
The fish and chip shop might  feature in the business section.

Hi

Do you have an address in Maldon, I'm not far from there, the one corner of High St & Princes St has been there for years, could this be the one?

Thanks for your reply.  It's all a bit vague I'm afraid.  My Mum thinks this could be the one as she thinks it was on the High Street and she remembers it being on a corner and that it had an upstairs to it (whatever that means!).  She was only young at the time and anyone else that might have been there has now sadly gone.

I'm just intrigued as to who this 'Jum' was...a 'cousin' of my nanna apparently, although that could mean anything!

I don't for definite, but it was the Warner family that came from that neck of the woods.  Unless he was the child of one of my nanna's aunts, in which case, possibly Dines or Copsey.

Now, this is if he was a 'proper' cousin...

Also just found out that we are probably talking 1950s-1960s.

Thanks for all your help on this!  Don't know why my mum has to drop these things into conversation!

I have asked a few people who have lived in & around Maldon for years, & they are asking parents/grandparents if anyone remembers them. I will let you know if anything comes up.

There was, up until recent years, a Copsey fish and chip shop, it was just outside Maldon but before you got to the turnoff for Heybridge and Goldhanger, I don't know if the family of Copsey are still in business but the fish shop is still there

I don't live in Maldon, I don't know the name of the road either but it was just before a small bridge where there is a Netto now, just passed the church and it was on the right

That is all I know about it, sorry I can't help anymore, if I can I will contact a relative who lives near there and come back to you with the name of the road

We often stopped there for chips with my daughter on our way home, they were alway delicious

regards

Hi Louisa Maud,

Thanks for your interest!!  The address on the Netto site is Maldon Bentalls Complex, Colchester Road, Heybridge, Maldon, Essex CM9 7NW.

I'm just intrigued by who this Jum was.   And also the fact that I've got someone who does fish and chips in the family!
