Hi Emma,
If you're looking for the chip shop in the High Street, I don't think Copsey's is the one . . . it is outside the town, in Heybridge, as previously pointed out . . .
There was another excellent shop just off the High Street, almost on a corner . . . which sounds like the one your Mum remembers. I've been trying, but sadly I can't think of the name, but I know it was there for many years under the same ownership.
How about a call to the local paper: http://www.maldonandburnhamstandard.co.uk They might have something in the archives.
Mike.

surely it wouldn't do any harm to write to the shop with a little of the family history, hopefully you will get a reply

Hi Emma
Been doing a bit of asking around, The chip shop your mum remembers is now a chinese, however the family 'Copsey' now have a shop in Heybridge, same people have had it for years, I think this would be your family, why not write to them the address has already been posted. Good luck, let us know how you get on.

Hi all, Copsey's fish and chip shop used to be in Maldon but there is now a Copsey's in Heybridge, I am not sure where it used to be the only other fish and chip shop actually in the town is Wheelers on the corner of the High Street and Gate Street. Hope this helps Carol

Hello people I am Tolga, I am the owner of Copsey’s Fish Restaurant in Maldon CM9. The Fish shop is under new management; well it’s been 8 to 9 months so I don’t fink it’s that new .
I had a quick look at this site and saw convocation between two members, I just wanted to point out that there is only one Copsey Fish Restaurant in Maldon and it has been open since the early or the late 70s. The business has changed by looks, there used to be two doors, one door you would walk in by your fish and chip and from the other door you wood exit the fish and chip shop.
There was also something about a Chinese take away which used to a fish and chip but I found out that there was only Copsey’s as a chip shop and no other chip shops except the one in the little shopping centre place.
If you would want to contact me please e-mail me at

I think the name you are looking for is Wheeler. Certainly the shop was open in the 1950's.
It remained in the family until about 2004, and I believe it is now called The Friendly Frier.
