Help on 1841 census Caynham
« on: Sunday 06 January 08 17:04 GMT (UK) »

On the 1841 Census I have
William Newall farmer aged 38
Jane wife aged 37
and children, but also Ann mother aged 87

This confuses me as I cannot work out whose Mother this is.
William's Mother was called Rosann and Jane's was Elizabeth Gittins.
However his grandmotehr was Ann, and the age would fit better.

Does the original image reveal anything ?

   Hi

The 1841 does not give relationship details.

For Ann it just has ...

Ann Newall   87 ind       born in county.

Yonder P -

Can you see a death for Elizabeth Gittins, or find her on the 1841 or 1851 censuses ?

I think she was the mother of Jane Newall nee Gittins who died in 1878, and married Willaim Newall in 1823.
I have an old photo which has been enhanced on this site and the people who are experts in this field have dated it around 1860.
Also they have suggested it is 3 generations, perhaps my gg father Jacob Newall on his marriage [1862], with his mother Jane [nee Gittins], and another related female a generation further back. This is the lady, who is around 70 years to look at I want to attempt to identify.

As this old lady is touching both the other 2 she is related to both I am told, so should be the mother of the lady and the grandmother of the other I am told.

I am trying not to get too excited about this early galls picture, it may all be wishful thinking, but maybe.....?

Did she come from Caynam?
Gittins burials at Caynham St Mary

8th Jun 1814
Elizabeth Gittins abode Cainham age 30 b.1784

Ann Gittins 4th March 1831 age ?2
abode Clee Hill by Birds Pottery

Bemjamin Gittins 14th May 1832 age 11w b.1832 abode Clee hill

Elizabeth Gittins is quite a common name however.Do you have the husbands name as that might help if they are not from Caynam.

No I only have the marriage of Jane Gittins in 1823 to William Newall at the Weslyan Chapel in Caynham.

I think Jane may have been born in Bitterley in 1803, daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth [nee Heyley], and Benjamin became a much used family name.

So I would be looking for Benjamin and Elizabeth on the 1841 censu.
