Hi Lynne J.   Sorry I cannot help but if you find a source of memorial inscriptions for St Giles & All Saints Orsett, I would be delighted to hear about it.  I have some family buried there mid 1800's and have visited the church yard but the stones are indecipherable (gritstone?)

Regards

That is very kind of you Kath, I would be looking for anyone with a surname Cowell.   I lived in Orsett parish for my first 21 years and still live only an hour away so I was going to offer Lynne the same service but it sounds as though you are a lot nearer than me.  Thanks again, Barry.

Extract from MIs for Orsett St Giles and All Saints
entry 99 "Headstone and footstone, pointed top with sloping sides.
Headstone: Sacred to the memory of William Hankings Taylor who died March 13 1844 age 54 also Benjamin Taylor son of the above who died Sep 22 1849 aged 22 years. Also Charlotte Taylor beloved wife of the above who died June 30 1870 age 68 years also three infant children.
At evening time there shall be light.
Footstone: WHT 184(4)*
                     BT  1849
                     CT  1870"
* I believe the brackets mean that the last figure is unclear and has been deduced.

As to any Cowells there were a number of these and the basic details are:
entry 505 Cowell Ernest died 30 March 1954 age 69
entry 387 Cowell Mary Ann died 3 January 1927 in her 80th year
entry 387 Cowell William died 7 April 193(3)* age 92
entry 442 Cowl Elizabeth Mary wife of William Dixon died 16 August 1959 age 79
entry 442 Cowl William Dixon died 26 July 1955 age 71
entry 265 Cowles John died 6 Oct 1902 in his 57th year

Many thanks Clincher, that is useful - and surprising.  I thought the Cowell line in Orsett had long gone but clearly they were still around in recent times.  There should have been several burials in the 1800's and if they are missing from the MIs then I wonder if it is because the stones are indecipherable or no stone existed or the burial was elsewhere?  I must contact the vicar and see if he has any Sexton's records.  Thanks again

Glad to help when I can. Lynne you'll quit when you're ready for it just like I was. I can thoroughly recommend being a non-smoker. Maybe the headstone was put up after his wife's death when money was available from her or her surviving family.
As for there being no older Cowell memorials that is probably due to them not being erected or they are no longer recognisable because of erosion, subsidence etc. I doubt whether the current priest will be able to give much assistance
