Commercial/County Hotel, Dumfries
« on: Sunday 06 January 08 22:13 GMT (UK) »

Hi Everyone

I am new to this forum but hope someone can help me with this query.

I am looking for any information on the Commercial Hotel, Dumfries which was owned by a Maxwell Copland in the 1901 Census My great grandmother Elizabeth Copland (nee McGeorge) died there in 1909. My uncle says it was called the County Hotel but on the death certificate it is  the Commercial Hotel.

Any information would be gratefully received

Hi Piglet01

Many thanks for the link. At last I have an answer- I didn't know who to contact to find out. I hope to go down to Dumfries sometime and check up about the hotel at the museum. Do you think they will have some information? Where is the best place to find out about an old  building?

Hello Diana,

Either the Ewart Library I'd imagine.  Please see,

http://www.dumgal.gov.uk/dumgal/places.aspx?id=42

or the local family history society

http://www.dgfhs.org.uk/

Good luck with your search.  Regards,   Steve   :O)

The County Hotel building is still there, it was a 'Next' for a while and I believe it is now Otkars (sp?) the bookshop. Binns (now demolished) department store was next door.

My Auntie used to tell me about going to the County Hotel for dances. Must have been in the 1950s. She met her first husband there! And yes it was originally The Commercial Hotel (according to my Dad so it must be true....)

Nothing to do with anything but I have a picture taken from outside the County hotel showing my Dad being dragged along the street by his grumpy Mother circa 1950.

Hopefully this rambling has helped slightly....

Hi sparkle

Thank you for your link - as I said before I am glad that I have found out for definite it was called both County and Commercial Hotel. I had the certificates but my uncle had a photo of a relative standing outside it and he was definite it was the County Hotel! he also knew about it being a Next shop as he had visited the area.

I hope to come down sometime this year and see where my rellies lived for myself.

Many thanks

Whilst browsing a famous auction website, I came across this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1884-letter-Dumfries-Commercial-Hotel_W0QQitemZ290248188607QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item290248188607&_trksid=p3286.m14.l1318

I'm not at all interested, but its cheap and maybe a nice bit of memorobilia for someone interested in the County Hotel/Commercial. Smiley

Hi sparkle

Sorry it has taken so long for me to reply to your post but I was scared in case I lost my bid on Ebay! Thank you so much for posting about the memorobilia of the Commercial Hotel. I managed to acquire both the letters about the Commercial Hotel and from John Copland who leased the Hotel. He was my great great grandfather and his son ran the Hotel until about 1914. I have just come back from researching the family and the Hotel so this will greatly add to my family history research.

It was also my first time using Ebay and I am so glad I was successful with my bid.

Many thanks again
