John and Charlotte Draper
« on: Monday 07 January 08 02:18 GMT (UK) »

Hi everyone,

you are all so helpful, and I've gotten great results from posting here before. I am looking for information on John Draper, and due to my limited funds I am unable to find any records farther back on him. I am hoping you can help. John Draper was born abt 1811 in Basing hampshire and married Charlotte birth abt 1813 in Turgiss hampshire. I am specifically looking for a birth record for him to find out who his parents might have been, and also a marriage record for the two of them. They lived at "wild moor"in the 1851 census, and John was a farmer and wood dealer. I have the family groups of many of the drapers and am trying to find out how they are all related. in the 1841 census there was another john b 1791, and Elizabeth b 1786, and then Daniel 1832,george 1834, eliza 1836, emma, and James 1840. Are they siblings of john? I have most of the family info from there, but im not sure how they are all related. any help would be very appriciated.

Hi Angela

Are  Daniel 1832, George 1834, Eliza 1836, Emma, and James 1840 not children of John and Charlotte - per the 1841 Census?

1841: Sherfield upon Lodden
HO107/  Piece 386 /  Book: 12 /Folio:  /  Pg  10
John DRAPER 30, Ag Lab - Y
Charlotte 28
Daniel 9
George 7
Eliza 5
Emma 3
James 1

For reference: 1851: Wilde Moore, Sherfield upon Lodden, Hampshire
Ref: HO107 /  Piece: 1681 /  Folio: 332 /  Pg 6
John DRAPER 40, Ag Lab, b Basing
Charlotte 38, b Turgis
Emma 13
James 10
Rhoda 5
Susan 4
Charles 8 mnths
All children born Sherfield
(In 1861 Census John the Head,  is described as a Wood Dealer).
(By 1851 son Daniel (born abt 1832) is in Service and not living at home, by 1861 he is married)
(In 1861, son George is married and enumerated on same page, further down,  as Mum & Dad)

IGI:
submitted marriage:
John DRAPER married Charlotte BLACKMAN  28 Aug 1831   Stratfield Turgis, Hampshire.
Do you have the 1840 birth cert of John & Charlotte's son James, or one of their younger children born after 1841 -   to see what mother's maiden name is?

To the John & Elizabeth in 1841:

IGI:
extracted marriage: John DRAPER and Ann SUTTON married 6 Jan 1810 Old Basing Hampshire

extracted baptisms:
John DRAPER 11 Nov 1810 Old Basing Hampshire
Sarah DRAPER 22 Nov 1812 Old Basing Hampshire

submitted marriage:
John DRAPER and Elizabeth WELLS 11 Oct 1817, Sherfield Lodden

1841: Sherfield upon Lodden, Basingstoke, Hampshire
HO107/  Piece 386 /  Book: 12 /Folio:  /  Pg  8
John DRAPER 50, Woodsman - Y
Elizabeth DRAPER 55 - Y
William WELLS 25 - Y
Henry WOOLFORD 15, M.S. - Y

1851: Wild Moore, Sherfield upon Lodden, Basingstoke, Hampshire
Ref: HO107 /  Piece: 1681 /  Folio: 334 / Pg 10
Head: John DRAPER 66, Coppice Dealer, b Oldiham, Hants
Servant: George WOOLFORD 20, Servant b Sherfield

My guess :
Your John has one sibling, Sarah.
They were born in Old Basing to John DRAPER snr  and his wife Ann nee SUTTON
Ann died btw 1812 and 1817 either with Sarah's birth, or because of it, or in childbirth to a 3rd child who may not have survived.

John Snr remarried to Elizabeth WELLS in 1817
John Snr and Elizabeth are also in Sherfield Lodden in 1841, John snr  is widowed in WIld Moore in 1851.  He is a Woodsman.
In the household is a William WELLS - perhaps  Elizabeth's son before her marriage to John whereby either she was previously married or William was illigitimate).

Perhaps may be strategically helpful - as and when funds allow - to find and obtain the death cert of John DRAPER snr to see who informed of his death :  if he died as a widower in Sherfield Lodden, chances are if your John , husband of Charlotte is his son (as is strongly indicated), he informed of the death.

cheers  Grin

May have a good tie up.........that supports the guessing above.
Guessing still - I think , your John's sister Sarah b abt 1812 Old Basing,  married William SEWARD in 1839 and by 1841was living in Burghfield in Berkshire.
In the 1891 Census, it looks very like this Sarah SEWARD, a widow, is living in Reading Berks in the household of James DRAPER, possibly the 1840 born son of your John & Charlotte.........

IGI submitted:
Sarah DRAPER married William SEWARD

1841: Burghfield, Berkshire,. Hundred of Theale
Ref: HO107 /  Piece 29 /  Book: 5 /  Folio: 11 /  Pg 16
Address: Burghfield
William SEWARD 33, Ag Lab - N
Sarah SEWARD 28 - N
Elizabeth SEWARD 2 -  N
William SEWARD 9 months - Y

1851:Burghfield, Berkshire
Ref: HO107 /  Piece: 1691 /  Folio: 358 / Pg 31
Address: Pinge Wood
Head: William SEWARD 44, Lab in Husbandry b Kingsclere Hants
Wife: Sarah 38, b Sherfield Hants
Dau: Elizabeth 12, Scholar, b Burghfield

Son: Tho's 8? , b Burghfield
Son: John 4, b Burghfield
Dau: Sarah 2, b Burghfield
Son: N . K. ?? days, b Burghfield (newborn!)
(In 1851 dau Elizabeth is listed as born Burghfield Berks - but in 1841, she is listed as not born in Berks).
(Enumerator check marks thru sons Wm and Thos  - making ages difficult to read)
RD covering Burghfield is: Bradfield.(In area of Buckleberry)

1861; Burghfield, Berkshire

Address (non specific)

Wife: Sarah SEWARD 49, b Old Basing Hants
Dau: Elizabeth SMOKEM* 22, widow, b Sherfield Hants
James SEWARD 10, b Burghfield Berks
(" FREEBMD: Elizabeth married William SMOKEHAM in 1858, Bradfield RD, Berks. He died  as William SMOKUM Dec 1860 Bradfield. She possibly remarried  as Elizabeth SMOKUM in Jun Qtr 1861 Bradfield to Jospeh OSTRIDGE)

1891: St Giles, Reading, Berkshire
Ref:  RG12/ Piece: 995/ Folio 80/ Pg 18
Address: Southampton Street
Head: James DRAPER 50, Carman, b Sherfield Hants  (b abt 1841)
Wife: Emma DRAPER 38, b Heckfield Hants
Dau: Emma DRAPER 9, Scholar, b Reading Berks
Boarder: George MOPPETT 22, unm, Carman's Labourer, b Langton Sussex
Boarder; George PARSONS 21, unm, Carman's Labourer , b Mapledurham, Oxon

Boarder: Frank EDWARDS 19, unm, Carman's Labourer
Lodger; Sarah SEWARD 77, wid, b Old Basing Hants
This Looks like James DRAPER here in Berks may be the son of your John & Charlotte?
And the Lodger Sarah SEWARD is actually his paternal Aunt - John's sister?

DEATH: Sep 1897 Bradfield RD Berks
Sarah SEWARD age 86

that seems to fit, yes I agree. I guess what threw me off was that second marriage. I forgot that back then people married and remarried due to many reasons. thank you so much for your help!

Hi Angela,

I can confirm the marriage from another source: John Draper married Charlotte Blackman 28 Aug 1831 at Stratfield Turgis.

The other one gives Elizabeth's name as Walls - you may need to get a look at the original record to confirm this.

Baptisms of children for John & Charlotte, all Sherfield on Lodden
Daniel 15 Jan 1832
George 4 Aug 1833
Eliza 18 Oct 1835
Emma 11 Feb 1838
James 28 Jun 1840

Baptisms of children for John & Elizabeth, Sherfield on Lodden
Betsey 27 Feb 1820, she was buried 16 Jul 1820 in Sherfield on Lodden

An Ann Draper was buried 29 Jan 1815 in Old Basing, aged 28.
