Seeking information on: Silvester EGAN who married Ellen OCALLAGHAN. I believe the EGANS came from Castlegregory Co. Kerry. They emigrated to NZ in 1875. They sailed from London on the "Helen Denny" on the 26th June and arrived in Napier on the 20th Sept.
Silvester and Ellen were accompanied by 6 of their children, Kate 16 yrs, (eldest child Nora remained in Ireland and went to NZ later) Mary 14 yrs, Michael 12yrs, Thomas 6yrs, John 4yrs and Silvester 2yrs...they had three more children after arriving in NZ. Any information on their lives in Ireland before emigrating would be greatly appreciated.
Regards Isabel, Australia.

IGI lists 4 children for Sylvester Egan and Ellen Callaghan: 1. Hanoria born 31 Mar.1865 Castlegregory dist., Kerry 2. Honora born 27 Oct.1866 Castlegregory dist., Kerry 3. Thomas born 17 Feb.1869 Co.Kerry 4. Sylvester born 11 Apr.1873 Co.Kerry
Two of the above records give Castlegregory so that would probably be a good place to start. Check LDS catalogue to see if church records for Castlegregory have been microfilmed (and if they cover the dates you need). If so, you can order them from your local LDS library for a small fee to view there. Hopefully you might find other children, etc.

Isabel,
My grandfather, Eugene Egan born 1851, came from Castlegregory, too and emigrated to New Zealand 1873. His parents were Thomas Egan and Mary Fitzgerald. He also had a younger brother called Sylvester, b.1861. Do you know the names of your Silvester's parents?

Hi Ceal,
I recieved this information recently from a lady in NZ:
The Egans come from Castlegregory, Co Kerry and emigrated to New Zealand in 1875. They sailed from London on the 'Helen Denny' on 26 June and arrived in Napier on 20 September. Parents Sylvester and Ellen OCallaghan were accompanied by 6 children: Kate aged 16, (elder sister Nora remained in Ireland and came to NZ later); Mary 14, Michael 12, Thomas 6, John 4 and Sylvester 2. Three more children: Ellen, Eugene and Julia-Margaret were born in NZ.
I don't know the names of Sylvester's parents...I was hoping someone in this group might be able to help me....I am happy to share any information I find on this family....as it seems there may be a connection.
Thanks for you reply, Regards, Isabel, Australia.

The only chance you have in finding (in Irish records) the parents of Sylvester Egan is a baptismal record (if the church records survived). Where did Sylvester die? any details about parents on death certificate?
Correction- Sylvester's marriage record from the church might list parents.

Hi Isabel,
Thank you for your response.
I wrote to the Parish Priest at St. Marys Castlegregory and asked for my grandfather's baptismal record. I also gave his parents names which were found on his marriage and death certificate. I received a printout of his family - his parents marriage date, and sibling names with dates of baptism.
Could your Sylvester and my grandfather be cousins? the christian names are similar.

Thanks Isabel, I would like to keep in touch. I note your Sylvester named his eldest child "Thomas" - my grandfather and his father did the same! My guess is your Sylvester's father was named "Thomas", too.
