If someone was down as a greengrocer on the 1861 census would they have owned a shop?? My ancestor Jane Ousby was a greengocer in Penrith and I wondered if there would be a record of where she worked/owned. Cass

Have you asked someone to look in a directory? (Mine's a bit early, 1829).  If her name's on it she's at least the proprietor even if she doesn't own the buildings.

What's the address?  Is it a streey of shops?

Good luck

The census only has her home address - longmires court, queen st, whitehaven. That seems a bit strange as I would have thought penrith was a good distance away. Cass

Hi

I'm confused - easily done, but if the address in 1861 was Whitehaven, where did Penrith come from?  Was it another document such as a marriage certificate?  Can she not simply have moved?

Just looked at the 1861. I see that she was born Penrith rather than being a greengrocer there  Undecided

I'm also confused.

sorry, i seem to have confused everyone including me. Totally forgot that she was born in Penrith but had obviously moved to Whitehaven!!! The address does'nt sound like a greengrocers so maybe she just worked in one. Cass

Hi
It's possible that she used the front room of her house as a shop.

It looks like she died Q1 1881  (aged 68) in whitehaven but unfortunately www.historicaldirectories.org doesn't have any directoriesfor cumberland between 1861 and 1881.

Hi

Have you looked on here?  Still a bit early, but later than 1861 census.  (From Rootsweb resources).

I'm still being slow, and I'm not sure who I'm looking for.

Hi

Whoops!  Sorry, I just went back and reread the start and she isn't there.

Looks as though it could well be a front room job, or just working for someone.

Sorry about that.

Looking on Emms reference , you'l see there is no Longmires court but there is a Mr. Joseph Longmire, druggist, living at 41 Queen st.
Gadget showed half the 1861 entry but who else was in the dwelling/

If the Longmires Court was connected to Joseph Longmire, they must have been quite a high profile family.  There's quite a few dwellings in Longmires court, and there's a Longmires Passage.

I'm trying to visualise where it might have been.  Queen St is quite a long street, it must have been somewhere that something else has been built in it's place. I'm intrigued - I'll have to try and find an old map.  Geoff have you not got one of the area?
