I don't know if you have this - from the IGI - www.familysearch.org - using the 'search' facility entering the parents names Bernard Doherty and Marjorie Devine.

You have also scored in a big way by having John born in 1855 as from SP:
"1855 birth records were very detailed and are a boon to the family historian. In addition to details about the child (date, place and time of birth, full name, sex), the parents' names (including maiden surname of mother), father's occupation, name of informant and relationship to child, an 1855 birth certificate also contains information on siblings, the ages and birthplaces of both parents, their usual residence and the date and place of their marriage. Such detail proved difficult to sustain and entries were modified from 1856. Information on siblings was removed, as were ages and birthplaces of parents and date and place of parents' marriage. In birth certificates since 1861 however, the date and place of the parents' marriage was reinstated".
Regards, Steve :O)

Wish I could help more with Marjory's parents, but as you can see, on the 1901 census she indicates she was born in Ireland. Do you have any idea which county in Ireland your family may have come from? Do you know what religion they may have been? I have been trying to trace my family and found that they too had come from Ireland to Ayr but were protestant so most of the records were burned in Ireland. I hope you do not hit the same brick wall I did.
I will do some more searching but suspect that her parents came from Ireland and there will be no records in Scotland on them. Could they have been Ulster Scots?

I don't know where they came from and I don't seem to see any religion so I think it's a brick wall from now on,are you from ayrshire yourself?

Hi Greendoor
I would in your position follow up on Steve's advice and look at the birth cert for John b. 1855. It will hopefully at least give you details as to where in Ireland Bernard and Marjory came from. With Irish parents, it's a lucky break when you come across an 1855 BC! This may prove to be the only source of info you will find as to where they came from in Ireland.
Regards.

Hi Greendor,
On the son John that was born 1855 his birth cert has great info!
John DOCHERTY Male born 1855 June 29 4h 30min AM Where born - Main street Beith Father - Bernard Docherty, Pawn Broker, 37 years, DONEGAL,IRELAND Married 1844 Ireland other children -1 boy 2 girls living, 1 girl deceased Mother - Marjory Docherty, Maiden Name DEVINE, her 5th child, 35 years, DONEGAL, IRELAND
So you need to look for records in Donegal , Ireland. amd you now have a good idea on dates for marriage certs to look for as well as birth certs based on their ages. As John was the 5th child and on the 1901 census he only had one older sibling (sister Ann) , we are missing some children from his family. I will check some older census records.
I am not from Ayreshire though I have been researching my family long enough that I think I am a major contributor to the Scottish and Irish economies!
