Any idea of a date??
« on: Monday 07 January 08 16:34 UTC (UK) »

This is a photo which was printed on a postcard. I am related to one of these ladies. Although I know I am unlikely to ever find out which one, can anyone maybe put a rough date to the picture?

It comes from a collection of my Mothers photographs, so it would have been taken in the Scottish borders somewhere.....

Aren't the hats fabulous!!!

Thanks!

Tx

The hair styles looks 1900-1908 to me but I think the hats look later. So I'll say 1905-1910 to be on the safe side  Undecided

Lovely photo. i'm sure I've seen the person back left before.

really  Shocked ..... let me know if you remember.... maybe it would be too good to be true to find out who any of the ladies are.

1905-1910 may be close, as there were three other pictures with this one, all postcards, which I can roughly date as I know who is in them and when they were born.

How old do you think they are? 20? With that date it is likely they are mill workers (all my family at that time were).

Thanks for the clean up Mudge  Cheesy

I'd say late teens and early twenties.

That face - I'm sure i've either seen on this site or have done a restore on  Undecided

Did any of them go to Australia?

There is a chance that one of them went to New Zealand.... as My g.grandmother and her sister (both about the right age for the photo but neither are in it) used to receive things from a sister/cousin in New Zealand.... clutching at straws arent I.......

I go along with Gadget.

The hats are big, but not enormous and there is still evidence of the puffed up sleeves at the shoulder - 1905 +/- 3.

She is very haunting - I'm sure I've seen a photo of her before:

I'd stick at 1910, I think.

OR has mentioned a couple of times that hats reached maximum width about 1910 and by 1912 or so started receding.

China,

That is my understanding also. These hats are not BIG though, just large, they got to shoulder width. So earlier than 1910. Also look at the shoulders, these had gone by 1910.

Also another thing I noticed, the coats are very loose...women's coats are more often fitted.

Don't forget that these ladies are most likely mill workers living in the scottish borders. So money would have been scarce. The fashions at best may have been a few years out of date and the coats would not have been brand new. And who is to say that the hats weren't borrowed for the picture..... This would explain the loose coats also, maybe borrowed also as their own 'Sunday Best' may not have been good enough for the photograph.... Just a thought...

And there seems to be some family resemblance between the lady bottom left and the lady top right. Or am I imagining it?

No, the coats are definitely loose cut, no tucks pleats or shaping. I know what you mean about borrowed clothes. They were made from good strong cloth in those days and could be handed down the family, so it isn't always a good way to date a photo.
I do think they look lovely girls though, and yes, the two do look like they could be related....

By the way, is there anything on the back of the photo, people on here do wonders with any information from the back as well.

I think there is definitely a resmblance between those two ladies, and also between the lower right and back center ones.

I am also thinking the coats are all very similar in style. The cut, the shoulders, the collars, the buttons and the cuffs are all nearly identical. So...my opinion of the coats is that they all date the same, and thus are more likely to be concurrent with the photo than out of date. IMHO Cheesy
