Hi
This gives information by trade within the town - no overall index. Sometimes a list of name only is given for each trade, some times addresses are given.
If you send as much information as possible as a look-up request I will see what I can do.
Best wishes

Hi Belini
You're welcome to as many look ups as you like.
Only thing is, I've had a look in the obvious place and he wasn't there. Many Masters started life in other linked trades and also as part of the crew who probably wouldn't be listed.
Many had more than one trade, or a family trade to fall back on, or didn't live in the town - though many did.
I'm pretty sure I've seen that name linked to l;ocal shipping and there is a William Coupland, owner of the Ship Inn in Marlborough St, right on the harbour. He could well be family. Maybe retired or his wife might run it.
I've to go out, but I'll look in the area around when I come in. there arem other places we can look too.
What date was he in Whitehaven as a Master? Do we know?
Best wishes

PS
I'll look in my newspaper Shipping News for my web site, later.
Also, have you looked on Mighty Seas web site? In fact there are hoards if you Google this area. Also, lists of ships registered.
Infact if you move this to the Cumberland boards - my directoy's on there, too, you may well get more info. (Or start another thread if it's easier.)
Have we got some family information?
Good luck!

Thanks for your help so far. Thomas Coupland/Copeland was definitely in Whitehaven when my great grandfather William was born In Jul 1805. Thomas described as Master mariner. Thanks again!

Hi Sue
I'm really sorry this has been sitting there. I didn't get any notification and somehow missed it.
You're welcome to a look up, and I'll have a good look through, but if you've any idea of the area or even which of the three counties, I'll get back to you much quicker. I'll look at the census for guide lines too. It's grouped by village and then by trade for each of the three counties.
I'll let you know as son as I find anything.
Best wishes

Hi again, Sue!
Well that was a mighty valuable hint!
Liverpool and Manchester are the only places with an index and what do you know, only two Bolshaws in all of Liverpool: Joshua and Thomas!
Brewers, (Marked thus * are retail.)
* Bolshaw, Joshua, St James St.
Curriers and Leather Sellers
Bolshaw, Thomas (and hardwareman) 56, Greenland St
They both seem to have a couple of areas of business, too.
I'll have a look through and see if I see anything else likely or other spellings. Let me know if you think og any more lookups.
Apologies again for only just finding it. I must look on the reply list, not just my emails!!
Best wishes

Hello Emms,
Are you still able to do lookups of Pigot and Co Directory? If so could you please look in Manchester for William Russell, a solicitor.
Thankyou,
Leigh

Hi Leigh
I can definitely still do look ups and you're welcome to as many as you like.
I've looked at Manchester though, and anywhere close by. Could he have worked for a firm of solicitors? They're actually listed as attorneys, but I can copy you the list later if you like, so that you can check for any in the area. I don't know how old he was. Could he have been a solicitor's clerk at this stage.
There are too many to type but if you like, I could copy the page and send it.
It's easier in e,ail, so you'd have to pm me with an email address. You're very welcome though.
Do ask if you'd like any more look ups.
Best wishes
