I wonder if someone would be able to do some lookups at Matlock Record Office.
I would like more details on these events recorded in the Kirk Ireton parish register:
Peter HOLMES Hannah BRATBY married: 21 Sep 1826 Kirk Ireton ---- William HOLMES christened: 23 Oct 1826 Kirk Ireton Father: Peter HOLMES Mother: Hannah ---- William HOLMES christened: 25 Jun 1827 Kirk Ireton Father: Peter HOLMES Mother: Hannah [note: possibly a red herring - an IGI submitted record] ---- Sarah HOLMES christened: 07 Jul 1828 Kirk Ireton Father: Peter HOLMES Mother: Hannah ---- Any death/burial records of any of the above 1828-1841 ----
My ggg-grandfather, Peter HOLMES / HULMES / HULME, was born 1804-07 in Kirk Ireton or "near Wirksworth", but settled in the Manchester area by 1834 with his wife, Sarah BROOKS (of the Wilmslow area in Cheshire), whom he MAY have married in 1833 in Warrington. Anyway, I'm trying to determine if MY Peter is this one from the IGI:
Peter HOLMES christened: 05 Feb 1805 Kirk Ireton father: William HOLMES mother: Sarah [STORER]
It's possible that Hannah BRATBY was MY Peter's first wife, but I have no record of them after the 1828 christening. Gumming up the works are a family with similar names on the 1851 census for Kirk Ireton, but they were all born in Dronfield.
It's all very convoluted, so let me know if this makes sense or not...

Thanks so much for doing that, moira - I wish these old PRs were a little richer in detail, but I'll take what I can get!

Moira - A little follow-up: I don't know how much time you've spent poring over the Kirk Ireton registers, but I wondered if the above data was typical of them (at least in pre-1837 days) - namely, marriages with no ages, professions, or parents mentioned, and deaths with no next of kin mentioned.
I keep thinking I'll find just the right scrap of evidence that will answer all my questions, but I don't want to get my hopes up too high, especially if the PRs aren't so forthcoming.
