I am looking for some help please in finding marriages for two Ambrose Mercers. Finding death dates or monumental inscriptions for them would also help. I am trying to work out which Ambrose is the father of Thomas born 1771.
one - christened Marden, Kent 1728, parents Thomas Mercer & Elizabeth Coveney two - christened Marden, Kent 1740, parents William Mercer and Mary Gilbert.
I have not been able to find marriages for either of them on the IGI or BVR or on the Marden parish records.
I am back as far as Thomas Mercer chri 1771 Tudeley & Capel parents Ambrose Mercer & Elizabeth. Presuming there are no other Ambrose possibilities for Thomas's father, one of the two Ambrose's must have married an Elizabeth.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Unfortunately, marriages at this time did not give the father's name, only the witnesses.
Therefore, I would be inclined to look at other items, such as, if Thomas is the eldest or only child of Ambrose and Elizabeth, the marriage most likely took plave 1769-70. Base on probabilities, the most likely contender, therefore, is the younger Ambrose, bap 1740, but this would only be speculation. The elder Ambrose bap 1728 would be around the age of 39/40 when he married, which is older than the norm.
Another possibility is to look at the names of Thomas children, as this may also give a clue,
Regards

Thanks for your reply Dave.
I have since discovered that William, father of Ambrose 1740 is the brother of Ambrose born 1728 so either way I am on the right line with Thomas the father/grandfather. chr 1688 Horsmonden. I would think that it is the Ambrose 1740 who is the father of Thomas 1771, but it would be good to find the marriages.
I have not been able to find any siblings for Thomas 1771 although I am sure there are some. There is a possible Joseph who was having children at a similar time to Thomas with christenings at Tudeley & Capel where Thomas was married. I am hoping to find other children. Thomas 1771 is the only child christened at Tudeley & Capel., but there are connections with Marden & Horsmonden and Tonbridge.

FamilyhistoryOnline does not have any marriages, but a search throws up the burial for an Ambrose Coveney Mercer in 1774, from the NBI (Kent FHS).

Thank you very much. That is interesting. Ambrose Coveney Mercer is the one born in 1740, son of William. Coveney was William's mother's maiden name. An early death at a young age may be the reason that I have not found other children.
Thanks again - all information is helpful.

I've run out of credits on there so cannot look that up on FamilyHistoryOnline. Will check the NBI later.

My little paperweight!

Hello,
I have one little piece of information that might help with the two MERCER marriages.
William MERCER and Mary GILBERT married by license which was dated during 1736. Unfortunately, I do not have the specifics of the license but the marriage was recorded in Boyd's Grooms 2nd Series, which indexed many of the marriage licenses that had been issued by the Archdeaconry court at Canterbury. Obtaining a copy of the marriage license might put you on the right track for finding the marriage.
Sincerely, Susan
