I think this may be a possibility
Possibly John did not marry Harriet until 1871 and so Edward would be born pre marriage-I cannot find a birth reg for Edward Sandford, but I can find one for Edward Jones at correct time and place
There is this marriage Jun qtr 1871 Hereford on same page John Sandford Harriet Jones 6a 871
then could this be harriett? 1871 Portway Rd Burghill John Watham head M 45 ag lab Burghill Ann Watham wife 48 Burghill Harriett Jones U 25 Domestic Servant burghill Edward Jones son 5 Burghill
RG10 2694 19 10
then in 1891 1901 census John gives p.o.b. as Morton on Lugg hereford
so could this be him?
1871 Bags portway Burghill Ann Sandford Head W 55 ag labs widow Holmer hereford John Sandford son U 26 ag lab Moreton herefrod George Sandford son U 23 ag lab Moreton hereford Joseph son 14 ag lab Burghill RG10 2694 19 9

Been doing a little digging !
This may be my imagination working overtime but......... there is a marriage Dec qtr 1864 Hereford John Watham Ann Lewis 6a 894
bear with me......
1861 there is Samuel lewis age 55 Burghill and with him is Ann lewis described as wife age 39 Burghill
but....
I can only find this (possible) marriage Sept qtr 1862 Hereford Ann Jones Samuel lewis 6a 773
haven't looked for a death of Samuel
but did Ann marry him and then he died shortly afterwards???
I haven't found Harriett in 1861
but...
what about this family in 1851
Hereford Union Workhouse Ann Jones Inmate 29 mother Farm Servant Burghill John Jones Inmate 12 son St Peters hereford Harriett Jones inmate 8 daughter St Peters Amelia inmate 4 daughter St peters Allice inmate 1mth daughter St peters HO107 1978 313 8
haven't looked for the children in 1861
What do you think?

So we have a Ann Jones in the Work house with Children
John Jones Inmate 12 son St Peters hereford Harriett Jones inmate 8 daughter St Peters Amelia inmate 4 daughter St peters Allice inmate 1mth daughter St peters
Then she married a Samuel Lewis in sept 1862 (buth the 1861 Shows them already to be married?) and her name became Lewis
Then Samuel Died and she married John Watham in 1864, with her daughter Harriet keeping her name Jones.
it makes sence apart of the 1861 census showing them married ..
Harriet then had a son Edward whom was also a Jones
Harriet then married John Sandford , but acnt be found in the 1861 or 1851 Census.
took me a while to get my head around this

We have harriett in 1851 (if she is the correct one ) in the workhouse with her mother)
It's just 1861 we are missing
this is a possibility 1861 St peters hereford Blue Coat School Elizabeth Jones U 40 Schoolmistress hereford Harriett jones neice 16 scholar hereford RG9 1819 43 33
the other children who are in the workhouse birth Alice Jones mar qtr 1851 Hereford 23 214
there are several deaths for Alice Jones between 1851-61 and i can't find her in 1861
Birth Amelia Jones Sept qtr 1847 hereford 26 1_1 I cannot find Amelia in 1861 -but again there are a few deaths between 1851-1861
Birth John Jones Jun qtr 1839 Hereford 26 181
a possibility for John in 1861 Pipe and Lyde hereford John Jones Lodger U 21 Burghill with Thomas and mary Griffiths and family RG9 1818 96 5
will try and sort out Samuel/Ann

He was umarried when the Census was taken living with mother and brothers.

I don't think they'd be the talk of the town -it happened quite often during that period of time - and in an odd kind of a way I think it made families closer -plus the fact a girl often didn't marry until she was pregnant - once the daughters married Mum lost the washing machine/baby sitter/ fire grate black leader etc
