RootsChat Web Page - Beginners Help Please
« on: Tuesday 04 January 05 17:27 GMT (UK) »

I am finding it very difficult to get my web page off the ground.

I can edit Index.html very simly with  text no problem.

I can upload files to ftp Manager - no problem-  but am unable to get them to display.

I have FrontPage 2000 which I can use. Can someone please tell me in VERY SIMPLE   ???terms how I can get a FontPage file that I have created to become my web page.

Very simple step by step help here would be really appreciated.

Hi Andy

I might be able to help as I've used FrontPage.  Might be easier rather than swap messages like this is to go to the Chat Room, if you like.

I did notice, however, in your post that you have an Index.html (with a capital I), that may be part of the problem as all pagenames should be lower case.

Let me know if you want a chat in the chatroom.  Otherwise trystan should be able to help when he comes on ...

Good luck

Hello Andy,

Well done on taking the plunge to build your own website. Smiley

I can see the following files in your space:

   Andy.JPG
   index.htm
   index.html

The "index.html" is the "your webspace is ready" page that you see when your space is first set up. The "index.htm" page is the page that you've created. Although while "index.html" (the "ready" page) then your page won't be viewable - so it needs to be deleted.

If you use an FTP program, then it's easy to delete a page. If you're using frontpage though, I'm not familiar with it I'm afraid.

If I delete index.html will index.htm appear as my web page.
If yes I will take the plunge and do it.

Many thanks - I have took the plunge and everthing uploaded OK.

I can now get on with designing my page properly now that I have got over the first hurdle.

Do you know how I could put my family history GEDCOM on my page.

Thanks again,

Andy

You can display it really well with phpGedView (see the link on this board up here for examples). I can install it for you if you like?

Andy,

I can create a space on your websote for phpGedview, and you can still develop your own pages at your own pace too - then you just put a link from your page to the phpGedview installed on your own RootsChat site.

Andy,

You don't need to - I set up the phpGedView, then you can upload your GedCom yourself (and as you update your GedCom you can then upload a new version). Smiley Smiley

Many thanks Trystan.

Now I hope you can help me solve the next problem as easily as you did my first one last night.

I am trying to set up a link between two pages as my next step.

I have inserted a hyperlink betwwen two pages that I have uploaded "Index" and "Cadman"  It works Ok on my computer  browser.  But on the uploaded files it won't work.

Any ideas how to solve the problem?

Look forward to hearing form you tomorrow.

Andy

Andy,

You're ploughing on with it!  Wink

The problem with the link between pages is that the link that you have is pointing to a non existant page called

Quote
<p><a href="the%20cadmans.htm">Click Here to visit Page Two &quot; The
Cadmans&quot;</a></p>

should be:

Quote
<p><a href="cadman.htm">Click Here to visit Page Two &quot; The
Cadmans&quot;</a></p>

Give it a whirl, and see if that works.
