this relates to Berkshire &  Bray:~

In 1871 the historian Edward Freeman picked out Berkshire's Domesday as of special interest. Compared witht hose of other counties its pages are rich i personal detail which breathes life into the statistics. The customs of Berkshire which it lists under the borough of Wallingford add much to our picture of elenth century society.
Domesday records Williams new castle at Windsor, built on half a hide taken from the manor of Clewer. Its details the 22 holdings of Henry de Ferrers, forefather of the Earls of Derby, and the relatively small holdings of at least 10 other counties. Above all ti can be compared witht eh chronicle of the Abbey of Abingdon The great Benedictine abbey had 47 bBerkshire holding, exactly as many as the King. The record of its dealings add signifgance to Domesdays names and figures.
Geopgraphically the county was and is extremely varied, int eh North from Lechdale to Old Windsor it was bounded for 100 miles byt he River Thames. Here there were extensive meadowlands and the oppourtunity for mills and fisheries. The Kennet int he south provided similar oppourtunities on a smaller scale.
But Berkshires real agricultural welath lay in the west, where tis manors in the Vale of the White Horse were important producers f graina dn cheese.

Bray (Brai(o)/ Bras
King Edward held it. 18 hides; they did not pay tax. Land for ... in lordship 3 ploughs; 56 villagers and 7 smallholders with 25 ploughs, 4 slaves; a church; 3 men at arms; meadow; 50 acres, woodland at 60 pigs. Reinbald holds 1 ide which belongs tot eh the church; he has 1 plough there. Value of the whole before 1066 £25; later £18 now £17.

Today the Thames-side village of Bray is overshadowed by its northerly neighbour, Maidenhead. In 1086 however maidenhead on of the manors of the minor Norman Baron Giles of Ansculf was assessed at a mere three hides while Bray was a Royal Maonr, assessed at 18. About 70 families farmed its 50 acres of meadow and had to pay 60 pigs a year fromt hose they fattened in its woodlands.
Contemporary Bray, in spite of aidenhead to the north and a complex of railways and motorways tot he south remains emphatically a village with a green, a pokey post ofice nd timber franed, white painted cotages. It has two distingusihed architectual features; the elegant 17thc Jesus Hosp. nd the 16th c cottage built above the churchyards lych-gate.
The priests who have served Brays church have been its most curious characters. Reinbal, the earliest appears in Domesday as the holder ofa hide of church land. Like his notorious successors, he seems to have been an adroir politican, for he had been Edward the Confessors Chancellor. he still held 16 other livings, was a tenant in cheif in five counties and in Berkshire not only kept his pre-conquest maor of East Hagbourne but been grantes another at Aston (now Aston Upthorpe)
Int he mid sixteenth century Simon Aleyn became Vicar of Bray. Thomas Fuller wrote if him in Worthies in England 1662:' The Vicacious Vicar living under King Henry VIII, King Edward VI, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth was first a Papist, then a Protestant, then a Papist then a Protestant again. He had seen some Martyrs burn two miles off at Windsor and found the fire toohot for his tender temper. This Vicar being taxed by one for being a turn-coat and an unconstant Changeling, "Not so," said he; "for i alwaies kept my principle, which is this, to live and die the Vicar of Bray."' He succeeded in his ambition and lies buried int he churchyard.
Teh well known song however, 'That whatsoever King shall reign, I'll be the Vicar of Bray, Sir!' was written in about 1720 and describes Dr Francis Carswell, who became vicar in 1667and held the living during the rigns of Charles II, James II, William III, Anne and George , the diarist, Thomas Hearne (1678-1735) called him 'an od rich stingy turncoat' and 'a curmudgeon of unsettled head'
the ancient vicarages of Aleyn and Carswell ahve long since gone but Brays peaceful bansk could well have formed part of the priest Reinbalds Domesday holsing.

so the above transcript lists three books that would be good for Lesanne to get hold of, or view at the National Library in London as they cover the period when record keeping was not at its best due to the Civil War / Commonwealth etc.

the Diaries by Thomas Hearne 1678-1735

Worthies in England by Thomas Fuller 1662

I daren't quote any posts, we're on page 19 already (eek...) ...but have a look at the foot of page 18, likely marriage and children for John Turner (son of Ralph & Susanna)

There are some fairly big gaps in the baptisms of John & Elizabeth's children - could be explained by stillbirths or infant deaths, but wonder if there might be any bapts. in other parishes to fit in the spaces?
I don't know if Lesanne wants us to follow up on the female lines at all, but if she does, I can't find Elizabeth Strood, John's wife (of parish Hurst at time of marriage - she may have been bapt. elsewhere though).

A weekend at the beach, gosh - it'll be a while before we can do that over here! it's coming down like knitting needles, and the wind is enough to knock you flat...

re Thomas Hear, the diarist:~

Hearne left his manuscripts to William Bedford, who sold them to Dr Richard Rawlinson, who in his turn bequeathed them to the Bodleian. Two volumes of extracts from his voluminous diary were published by Philip Bliss (Oxford, 1857), and afterwards an enlarged edition in three volumes appeared (London, 1869). A large part of his diary entitled Remarks and Collections, 1705-1714, edited by C. E. Doble and D. W. Rannie, has been published by the Oxford Historical Society (1885-1898). Bibliotheca Hearniana, excerpts from the catalogue of Hearne's library, has been edited by B. Botfield (1848).

Re John Turner's wife Elizabeth Strood - nothing on A2A for Strood in Berks., but a good few Wills for Stroud, which is what I think her surname may actually be, having had a quick bash at the IGI (didn't find her though  Sad  )

If you fancy having a crack at any of these Wills, Lesanne, I'm up for it...

...and just a quick thought, I had a re-read of some of the earlier posts in Parts 1 and 2 today - do you still want a transcript of the Will of Joseph Keeble, or did he turn out not to be important? since the topic has been moved, the link seems to have gone, I can't view or download the image...
