Stephen Cobb born about 1855
« on: Tuesday 08 January 08 22:49 GMT (UK) »

Just wondering if anyone has any information on one of my ancestors.

Stephen Cobb was born in Wisbech, Cambs around 1855. He is listed as 5 on the 1861 Census living at home with his brothers, sisters and parents Charles and Sarah Cobb.

The 1871 Census says he is 17 and a Farm Servant living with Elizabeth Donkin aged 50 and her daughter Anne Caroline Donkin aged 28. The Civil Parish of Weel. Town of Beverley.

I am struggling to find him after this.

Many thanks in anticipation for all responses and replies.

I can't find him on the 1881 census. Of course, his name may be one of those which has been very badly transcribed.

Do you know for certain that he didn't die between 1871 and 1881?

Thanks for your prompt response Jill.

Sorry I`m not certain he didn`t die between 1871 -1881. What I can say is, I`ve checked on FreeBMD and there is only one death for a Stephen Cobb after 1871 in any area and that was a 9 year old in West Ham.

I`ve also checked for the Donkin ladies in 1881 and they are living together in Tickton & Hull Bridge. No other people in the household.

Thats all I know unfortunately Sad  Thus the reason for posting on here with the hope someone else may be looking for him as well ( a big ask I know but thought it was worth a try  Smiley )

Hi Steve,

That was the only death I could find on FreeBMD too. I know it's not necessarily definitive, but it doesn't look like he died between 1871 and 1881 - so where is he on the 1881 census?

I suppose, given that he's already travelled from Cambridgeshire to Yorkshire by the age of 17 - presumably for work - he could turn up anywhere. There's always the possibility that he's tootled off to USA or Australia!

Hopefully, someone with a sub to Ancestry will find him on the 1891 census?

Hi Jill,

Thanks very much again for your reply, your comments and suggestions Grin Grin

Apart from going abroad the only other alternative I can think of is that he may have been involved in The Boer War??

Hopefully like you say someone with an Ancestory subscription may find him on the 1891 Census.

Appreciate your interest.  All the best  Steve

Hi Steve,
I've checked the 1881/91 & 1901 census on Ancestry and if Stephen Cobb is on any of them, then he is remarkably well hidden.

This link is probably totally irrelevant

http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi?forum=cobb&url=%2Fcobb%2F&path=%2Fcobb%2F&terms=Wisbech&boolean=AND

I am intrigued as to where your Stephen disappeared to, so I tried googling. Is it just a coincidence that some Cobbs from Wisbech obviously emigrated round about this time? perhaps the names will mean something to you?

Or not! For all I know, there might have been hundreds of Cobbs in Wisbech!

Sorry if I've muddied the waters even more!

Hi Bee, Hi Jill,

Many thanks Bee for going to the trouble of checking through the 1881, 1891 & 1901 Census for me. You`re very kind. Smiley

Thanks also to you Jill. Smiley Have followed the link you posted and found a post regarding Sarah Maria Cobb. Sadly thats one I already knew about but appreciate the thought.

I haven`t tried googling yet, so I don`t get side tracked, can you remember what you typed in to see all the Cobbs
that emigrated?

Thanks again Bee & Jill for your keen interest and the details given in your responses.

Hi Steve

Maybe of interest, maybe not but on the 81/91 & 01 census there is a family of Cobb living in Beverley, the head of the family is a John born c1841 in Wisbech.  If you would like the full details, just yell.

Thanks for that Bee  Smiley

This will sound ungrateful but I`ve already got him. John Cobb is living with ( I can`t find a marriage although they are claiming they are husband and wife it seems ) Maria Wick.

John Cobb is Stephens eldest brother.

Appreciate the thought and the offer though Bee.
