« on: Tuesday 08 January 08 23:15 GMT (UK) »

Is it possible to look at burial information without being fleeced by the online service??  I am not even sure the date I have is correct for the burial of my gt grandad so am loathe to pay on the off chance.

Any suggestions??

Thanks

Hi Veebareeba - the records for 1866 - 1987 are also at Manchester Central Library - I can't tell from your profile if you're in the area, so this may be of no use.
http://www.manchester.gov.uk/site/scripts/documents_info.php?categoryID=1062&documentID=462&pageNumber=5

Re suggestions - I'm not sure if you're certain of the date of death - if not I'd check as many sources as possible (GRO & LancashireBMD say) for the name & try to get the death certificate. You can also search the records online to get burial dates with that name & see how they then tie in with age/date of birth on the GRO inidices. Both ways it depends on how common the name is, how easy ot will be to resolve.

What you really end up paying for is the plot number and other occupants of that plot. As the cemetery is very large the former is virtually essential & the latter quite useful. The records at the library would give you a plot number, but not other occupants.

Another RootsChatter has posted the cemetery plan for Philips park & aerial photo on this site - if you get a grave reference you can see whereabouts it is.

Hello vee.

With regards to the records at the library  . If you are fortunate to have a deceased recorded at a certain address on a particular census then I have found that the details on their records show their home address .
I have only used it for a burial in 1916 so I am afraid that I cannot comment on earlier dates but my relative was on the 1901 census at that address and remained in the same house until 1916 .
Armed with the plot number I went to Philips Park but as previously stated , it is a massive cemetery .
I have not serached for it at length as yet but I may have another look in the better weather but at least I am certain that I have found the plot number .

Thanks for all the advice on this topic.  My problem is I seem to be dealing with a mystery man!  My great grandad, Thomas Sweeney, was born in Newton Heath about 1859 but I cannot find his death.  I have tried Lancs BMD, Ancestry etc without success.  I just have vague memories of my mother saying they travelled to the other side of Manchester (from Swinton) for his funeral.  My mum was born in 1918 so I have just tried guess work on Tom's death.  I found a death in Philips Park for 1935 ... just clutching at straws really.  And then of course, there is the RC cemetery, St Joseph,s in (I think Moston)......

I have a feeling a trip to Preston (from Liverpool) may be the answer as no doubt his death/burial was recorded in his local RC church in Pendlebury.

Agh!!  Why does work always get in the way of my fun??!!   Angry

Veebareeba - you can look at the full GRO index under "images" on FreeBMD. They have a death registration for Thomas Sweeney in March quarter 1935 Manchester N 8d 596 age 0 - so if this is the one buried at Philips Park it doesn't sound like your great granddad.
A thought, as you mentioned Pendlebury - this comes under Salford, rather than Manchester is it possible that he was buried in Salford? If your mum was very young she may have had a different idea of the "other side of Manchester" then.
Further thought - have you managed to trace any deaths or burials for other members of the family (wife, children who died as infants, parents) - sometimes people are not geographically where you might expect, but are buried in an existing family grave.
Finally, unlikely from what you've said regarding your mum's memory & being RC, but Manchester had opened the crematorium at Southern Cemetery in 1892.
