having read your previous posts, I think the family I found in 1861 may be the correct family -and either an error has been made on the census form and the enumerator has entered William instead of Edward -or (I noticed this family tend to use their middle names) he is William Edward/Edward William?
It looks like some tragedy befell this family
Maybe George Edward (the son) was not the child of Charlotte -maybe Edward/William had been married/widowed before daughter Charlotte was born?
Hope you can follow my train of thought???
1871 shows New orphan House Ashley Down and Stapleton Gloucester CHARLOTTE HODGES 10 Scholar Brighton Sussex RG10 2575 73 2
this is possibly your Charlotte
and in 1881 West End Esher Surrey Thomas Hodges Head W 74 Pensioner of Police Force Esher Surrey CHARLOTTE HODGES Granddaughter U 20 Brighton Sussex RG11 839 15 24
in 1871 West End Esher Surrey Thomas Hodges 64 Pensioner metropolian police force Esher Surrey Susan wife 70 Oxon Thame EDWARD HODGES grandson 15 Errand boy Brighton Sussex RG10 863 28 47
could this be George Edward using his middle name??
also Thomas and Susan had a son of correct age to be George and Charlotte's father 1851 St james Rd Croyden Thomas Hodges Head 44 Police Constble Esher Surrey Susan wife 50 Oxon heazesy? EDWARD son 18 ag lab Newington Surrey John son 14 errand boy Newington Surrey HO107 160 1480 9
then 1841 Scarbrook Hill Croyden Thomas hodges 30 Police Constable yes Susan 40 no EDWARD 8 yes Emma 5 yes John 4 yes Ann 2 yes Ann McQueen 50 Seamstress Ireland HO107 1078 37 16
I think the purchase of birth certs of George Edward and Charlotte is necessary to be certain of their parentage
