Windows is unable to load my local profile so uses a temporary profile. This appears to mean I'm unable to save things such as documents, favourites and photos. Suggestions relating to how I can rectify this problem are welcomed.

Tricky one.

I don't know what you mean by 'a temporary profile'.

There is an All Users profile so possibly that is being used.

You will need to login as the Administrator.  If you are using Windows XP Home edition that means you will have to reboot into safe mode and access the Administator account that way.

You will then need to click on My Computer and navigate your way to:

C:\Documents and Settings

You will see a number of profiles there:-

Adminstrator
All Users
Owner
Your Name

Basically you will need to compare the files in those user accounts with your usual one and see if an important file is missing.  The hidden file NTUSER.DAT is an important one.

I had this problem a while back and I could not get into the Administrator account it would just hang on Loading documents and settings ....

In the end I copied the entire Administrator folder from a backup and overwrote the one that wouldn't work.  That worked for me and I finally managed to get into the account.

What you do with your usual account though is more problematic.

Make a copy of it first before you alter anything, so your should have a folder Your Name(2) once it is copied.  Then try overwriting the NTUSER.DAT file will the one that is in All Users.  You may want to try overwriting your whole profile with one of the other profiles to see if that works.
