My Mum made me pretty frocks
|
Hello Pinkjeans
Welcome to Rootschat
If you know the date of his marriage and his death*, you can get images of the certificates online from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.
It's pay to view but is very reasonable compared to the England & Wales certs. For example, an index search and an image would cost 6 units or £1.20.
It might be worth checking on the UK censuses - 1891-1901 to see if you can locate him.
Regards

* I have checked the index for his death cert and it is there - 1947, aged 62, Colvend.

Hi again
I've had a quick look through the 1891 census (Eng) and marriages of his parents but so far can't find a likely family. Also checked the free BMD index for his birth but there are a considerable number:
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
I hope someone else might be able to come and help as I have to go now.
Regards

I wonder if this is Joseph's family in 1891 in Tixall, Staffordshire - maybe you will recognize the middle name initials:
Joseph Vaughan 32, agr. lab., b. Milford, Staffordshire Sarah A Vaughan 27, b. Newport, Shropshire Mary A Vaughan 6, b. Gayton, Staffordshire Joseph T Vaughan 3, b. Littleworth, Staffordshire
Regards.

That's great Ev.
And likely entry for parents' marriage:
Marriages Jun 1884
Vaughan Joseph Stafford 6b 45 Wright Sarah Anne Stafford 6b 45
You will be able to confirm mother's maiden name from Joseph's 1925 marriage cert.

Hi
I'm back now.
I saw those entries before I had to rush off, Monica, but felt that they weren't close enough to the info that pj gave - birth 1885/6 and mother Sarah Watters. it could be that it was a second marriage.
I think it might be best first of all to check the info from the marriage and death certs for parents's names and father's occupation.
I'll go see what I can dig out.

The death certificate (15 July 1947) shows Joseph to be a chauffeur, living Kippford. Aged 62. His father, Joseph, was a fitter and turner (dec) and his mother was Sarah, m.s. Watters, as pj said.
So we're looking for a fitter and turner. I don't think the Staffs one is likely

Interestingly, the marriage cert gives the father as George Vaughan, rivetter. Neither parents down as deceased on 30 April 1925. Joseph was 40. Which suggests a birth date of 1885 or even 1884

Think I might have found the family in 1901
RG13/4767 Folio 81 Page 7
46 Blandford St, Westgate, Newcastle upon Tyne
George Vaughan, 51, Rivetter, boiler, b. Ireland Mary, 48, b. Ireland William 23, labourer - shipyard, b. Scotland Annie, 18, servant, b. Newcastle upon Tyne Joseph, 16, heater - iron trade, b. Hull George, 13, b. Newcastle upon Tyne Sarah, 11, b. Newcastle upon Tyne David, 3, b. Newcastle upon Tyne
Mother wrong - but could Sarah have died It's the nearest that I can find and it's in the right area.

William, aged 23 in 1901's mother was a Sarah Ann m.s. looks like Fonler or Ferler on his birth cert:
Anderston, 6 Dec 1877, William James Father George Vaughan, boilermaker, journeyman
Not sure about it but it looks interesting. This snippet shows the parents names and the date and place of their marriage.
