Certainly a better fit Gadget  Wink  Father's names threw me off the path!

This looks like the family that you have in 1891:

George Vaughan    38, b. Ireland
Sarah A Vaughan 34, b. Ireland
William J Vaughan 13, b. Scotland
Ann J Vaughan    8, b. Scotland - differs from 1901. If she was born in Scotland, would help to reconfirm mother's maiden name
Joseph Vaughan    6, b. Hull
George Vaughan    1, b. Hull

Address: 94 Blandford St, Westgate, Newcastle upon Tyne

Ann daughter's birth place looks to have been put down in error for the 1891 entry. This looks like the family in 1881 before her birth already in England, with a slight detour via Ireland:

George VAUGHAN      Head       29      Ireland      Boiler Riveter
Sarah Ann VAUGHAN      Wife       28      Ireland
William James VAUGHAN      Son       3      Glasgow
Thomas VAUGHAN      Son        1        Ireland

Address: 28 Ormond St, Hedworth Monkton & Jarrow, Durham, England

Thomas must have died young (explains the gap in ages between William and Annie).

Many thanks Monica.  I think you are on the right track now.  I am looking forward to finding out more.  Smiley

I am trying to research my grandfather - Joseph Vaughan, born 1886 (or 85).  He died in 1947 at Kippford in Southern Scotland.

He worked as a boiler maker in a shipyard in Gateshead before moving to Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland where he met and married my grandmother.

His father was also called Joseph Vaughan and his mother was Sarah Watters

Thanks Gadget.  Things are hotting up.  I have also looked at a few of the Vaughans you have came up with.  Would there be any point in getting a look at Joseph and Edith's marriage certificate.  I wondered if further details of Joseph's former address ect might be on it.  Grin

It would certainly be worthwhile you having a look at the original images (marriage and death) on line at Scotlands People. You can often pick up additional info from what could be included. Gadget and Ev had carried out the searches so you know exactly what to search for on SP.

From Pam's useful guide on research resources here in Scotland www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,24468.0.html, she has included a section as to what you will normally find on certificates. For marriage and death certs:

Marriage
Date & Place of Marriage
Whether by banns, licence or certificate
Name and age of bride and groom
Occupations of bride and groom
Marital status of bride and groom
Current address of bride and groom
Names and occupations of the fathers of the bride and groom
Mother's maiden name of the bride and groom
For regular marriage - name of officiating minister (or registrar from 1940)
For irregular marriages - date of conviction (to 1939), decree of declarator or sherriff's warrant
Names of witnesses

Death
Full name of deceased
Marital status
Spouse's name
Sex
Date & Place of death
Given age
Cause of death
Occupation (or name and occupation of husband if the deceased was a married or widowed woman)
Father's name and rank or profession
Mother's name and maiden name
Name, address and family relationship (if any) of the person who reported the death.

Regards.

If you read the thread, you will see that I have looked at both the marriage and death certificates and (possible) brother William's birth cert. (i.e. I used 18 units of my own).  This is what led me to a father George and to Newcastle in 1901 (ironically, I now live there and my ancestors were from Kirkcudbright). Without this, you would all have been flaying around in Staffordshire.

Joseph's address at marriage is just given as Kippford. All the details are here on the thread - I put them up earlier today.

Gadget

Also a few tips from me to not just newcomers  - never jump in and go to the first one that fits, look at all the evidence until you see something that really looks like the best fit. Anyone can do look ups - they just need the resources. Not everyone can sift through the evidence.

Yes thanks Gadget.  I have been doing some footwork as well and have looked at his death certificate (indeed I have an extract).  I know its difficult to read all the signs.  One of Joseph's sons ended up living in Staffs so there are connections.  I think the right track is George Vaughan from Ireland.

Many many thanks for all your help.  I can get on with things now I have some options.
