Oh dear Mogs Mum - I must have been one of those  stupid, 'must have it now' people - got into awful debt at one stage of my life - massive mortgage, interest rates sky high and new babe. I would truly have been better off without the card, although food would have been scarce  Shocked

On the other side of the coin, I had a trip to the US 30 years ago when credit cards were very rare in Australia & we didn't have one. Couldn't rent a car - no credit card - no car.

I do believe a credit card for monthly or other regular payments is much safer than a debit card. if the amount taken is incorrect, or the service not provided, it is easy to get a refund - not always the case with debit cards.

For those wanting the safety of a credit card without the interest - a visa debit seems a good option. (As mentioned by northern-rose) My daughter uses one of those all the time. She doesn't trust herself with a credit card  Smiley and interest is not an issue - it is a debit card in disguise  Grin Settling at the end of the month by automatic direct debit can be very scarry - if there is not enough money to cover the amount due!

In the UK you have better rights if you buy something on a credit card over £100 that you won't get on a debit card.  Under UK Law (Consumer Credit Act), it's the credit card company that is responsible if the goods you have bought are faulty or are not sent at all, and they are obliged to refund you.  You DO NOT get this protection with a debit card.

Errr..... not entirely true in the UK, I'm afraid.  Disputed monthly payments on credit cards can take up to 3 months here.  By far the best method for regular payments in the UK is Direct Debit (which is not the same as charges to debit cards), because banks have to refund disputed payments immediately.  Of course, they can seize the money back later, if you are proved to be in the wrong.  I had to do this recently when I found that an internet provider had been taking payments from my bank for six months after I cancelled.  I disputed the payments with my bank, and they were refunded on the spot.

Wow Nick

I'd better check my bank - things may have changed over here - or else I'll have to start international banking  Grin
