Ancestry wont accept Maestro what can I do?
« on: Wednesday 09 January 08 16:21 GMT (UK) »

Hi

I found out today that in February when my Ancestry subscription runs out I will not be able to use my Maestro debit card.  They will only take credit cards.   Angry

When I emailed them to ask they have just said “we only take credit cards”.  I don’t have one.

Has any one else had this problem?  What did you do?  Huh

Hi Iria,

Its a real pain the the proverbial.  I'll let you know what they come back with.  Hoping I can use my daughters card, don't know what else I can possibly do  Cry

I also heard Genes Reunited are stopping Maestro as well, but I paid end December and that went through fine.

When I looked at the Ancestry site today it appears you can purchase pay-as-you-view vouchers, there are links on the site, if I remember correctly - might be an idea for you?

Hi,

Not for me, I help friends and family with their trees.  If it was just mine (which I have done) I would most likely pay to view, but with the number of census records I end up looking at, it would cost a small fortune.

Think I'll have to ask the family for the "loan" of a credit card.

I don't know what Maestro have done that Switch didn't, but there seems to be more and more sites (not just family history ones) that won't now accept them.

Personally, I can't see what their problem is,   I have a debit card I can't run up lots of debt on it, if I don't have enough cash I can't spend, simple as that.

We seem to be becoming a nation of people in debt, no wonder when the easy option for me in this case would be to get a credit card and run up £££s in debt on it.  Maybe I'm getting old  Huh

I don't know if it will help, but some banks do a Visa debit card which is treated as a Visa credit card............practically everywhere will accept it.

On 12 October 2007 I had to renew my Genesreunited subscription using Paypall and a credit card. I didn't have the option to use my debit card. I too cannot understand why people are not allowed to use their debit card. After all there is TOO MUCH DEBT around and it's just getting worse. I rarely use a credit card these days.

I just logged on to paypal.co.uk and it appears that they do accept Maestro and will then presumably pay Ancestry for you. You had better check this first though. Perhaps someone else will see this and advise you further about Paypal. I have had no problems with it so far.

I had the same problem last week. It is a real pain. I don't have and will never have a credit card. All I can say is that Ancestry has lost my subscription and it looks like they are going to lose out on many, many more.  The very nice lady was telling me about the pre payment vouchers and where to obtain them from. Also a software package that has pre payment vouchers included with it.. I am happy with my current software so that is no use either.. Lincsbabe Huh Sad Angry

Yeah, canny use GR or Ancestry now, so stuff em. I will NEVER have a Credit Card. Never had a prob with Switch, but Maestro seems to off limits to some.
There are other [non FH] sites where you can only use a CC

Q
Why is it called a credit card if it allows you to go in debit and a debit card can only be used if you are in credit?.

Q
Why is it called a credit card if it allows you to go in debit and a debit card can only be used if you are in credit?.

Credit (as in “C. card”) allows to you to purchase an item on “credit” – i.e. buy now, pay later.  By purchasing something using the card you have created a situation in which you knowingly put yourself into debt. Naturally you should pay off the debt in full, as soon as possible, and avoid charges.

Debit (as in “D. card”) allows you to make purchase an item and pay electronically with the money being taken directly from your bank account. This does not put you into a debt situation as purchasing the same item on a Credit card.

If you are purchasing on a Credit Card as you get added consumer protection from the Card Company – see first item on: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/tips/01-11-2006/

My daughter uses one of these as well - it works well for her.

I always use a credit card as I like the security of same, especially for recurring payments. I don't know about UK but in Oz it seems almost impossible to get a bank to stop or refund a debit unless the person who got the money agrees. With a credit card, it has to be authorised & you can argue if it wasn't.

Trish

Re the use of debit/credit - what is a credit to me is a debit to the bank & vice versa - the banks show the Debit & credit as it sees them, not as the customer sees them.
