We have a credit card, which we use just for these purposes. Makes things easier.
We are not ones to use it willy nilly, so it gets tucked away again . And, as Trish says, you get the added security.
PayPal also give you the possibility of giving your bank account details so that the money can be taken directly from your account.

I would never use anything BUT a credit card for making purchases on line....subscriptions etc.
We have one card for such puposes and it is payed off each month.
With a credit card, the customers liability is limited to $50 in case the card is stolen...or the numbers purloined from the net.
With a debit card, if someone gets their hands on those numbers you can have your bank account wiped out with no recourse.
Credit card is much safer.

Perhaps we need to think about this from Ancestry's point of view.
Transactions taken on debit cards are not checked, ie to see if there is enough money in the bank account unless it is a Solo or Electron card. So if the payment bounces then either Ancestry lose out or have to cancel the subscription which causes more administration for them. When they accept a credit card they will almost certainly get their money and if the buyer has gone over their limit then that is their problem with the credit card company.
Like some others have already said, I would never use a debit card on the internet - your bank details are too readily obtained by fraudsters nowadays and you are liable up to a quite high value. That is why so many insurance companies are selling policies just in case your details are stolen. At least with a credit card you are limited to a relatively small amount. I have 2 credit cards - one which I use for purchases on the net and nothing else and the other for other purchases and not for on the net. If there's a problem then you have established a pattern to show the credit card company.

NO-ONE has to get themselves into debt with a credit card. It is not going to run up debts on your behalf; only you can do that. Don't you trust yourselves?? I have a credit card. Every time I use it, I make a note in my accounts and 'move' that amount of money into a separate column ready for when the bill comes, then I pay it off in full. I use it because it offers more protection for refunds in the case of faulty or non-arriving goods, and more protection against identity fraud, particularly with online purchases My card is with a well-known company, and if there was a sudden deviation from my normal spending, the company would ring me to make sure it was in order. Years ago, if you bought a large item, you would receive a bill or invoice to settle at the end of the month. What is the difference?

I use Ancestry at our local libraries for FREE! Ok, it's not so convenient but you do get out and meet lots of friendly people. However, it's classed as Ancestry "Library Edition". Does that mean there is something missing from it? You can even print off copies for a small fee too. I have visited several libraries over Solihull and never have I had a problem.
In the long term it helps to keep the libraries open and people employed.
I do confess I did take advantage of the free 3 days last Autumn when I sat for hours trying to explore every avenue.
Off out now - it's a sunny morning with blue sky here at last.

http://www.maestrocard.com/uk/security/securecode.html
I don't think it is so much about not accepting recurring charges but rather that Maestro are introducing an added security layer for online transactions - click on link above for details. I guess its a sign of the times and necessary to avoid online theft - i mean if the have your card and the CCV (the 3 numbers on the back), the crook has a licence to spend. With this new security layer, they cannot get passed your password - and unfortunately for us, neither can Ancestry.
For what it is worth, I got an email from Ancestry and thought it was a fake so I contacted them - here is the Ancestry official line on the matter..............................................
I apologize for any confusion or inconvenience. Starting in January of this year Maestro instituted new rules to their payment processes that prohibits recurring transactions with their cards. As we are a company whose primary products are recurring subscriptions Maestro will no longer permit us to process transactions.
We understand the desire of many of our customers to not have to use a line of credit to make a purchase on our site and sincerely regret the inconvenience this new policy causes. We are currently looking to other direct debit processes in the U.K. that allow our business model. When we find one that is secure and favorable for the customer we will work to implement it to our site. In the mean time if you do not have or do not wish to use a card displaying a VISA, MasterCard, or American Express logo you can send a money order in GBP to our offices in the U.S. to make the purchase.
Our mailing address is:
The Generations Network Attn: Ancestry Sales P.O. Box 990 Orem, UT 84059 U.S.A.
If you choose to use this form of payment please identify the subscription that you wish to purchase and include the name on your account, your mailing address, your email address, and your username.
Best regards,
