I guess they are may be thinking about that.
Can I suggest that perhaps we all email their Fraud Prevention unit fraudprevention[at]tgn.com. Text of my original email to them is here
I have received no communication from your company regarding the withdrawal of payment by UK Switch/Maestro debit cards. I am concerned that the various links embedded within the email may be a phishing attempt.
If your firm has removed the debit card payment function, can you please confirm when the business decision was taken and why I did not receive any advisory mailshot. Further, since I do not hold any other payment cards myself, how am I to continue my researches? It seems incredible that your firm would rather that your customers make use of interest charging credit cards rather than responsible budgeting that EPOS/debit cards offer.
My thinking is that the more of us that complain/contact them, then (perhaps) they will get a replacement option in place. I mean I only signed up in December 2007 - is Ancestry trying to tell us they only found out about this in January 2008? I suspect Ancestry would surely have been told of this months ago but have done little if anything to effect a replacement.
The fact that we have been "caught in the lurch" might in part be due to fact that perhaps their subscriber base is mostly credit card users. Or put another way, apart from the UK, is the debit card seen as the norm? For example, I was over in melbourne Australia 2005 and the folks were saying that their version of Switch had "only been recently introduced" - much later than in the UK. Even in Japan, the Visa debit card was only 1st introduced in 2006. And a certain US based inter-continental hotel chain does not accept debit cards either!
Long story short - if the UK market is only a small proportion of the Ancestry client base and the number of debit card payers in the UK is even smaller, we might wait a long time. Hence my suggestion that we all email and voice our complaints. Can't guarantee they will listen but as the proverb says, a dripping tap......
Better stop here or they will be black-balling my account!

I contacted Ancestry again just recently to see what other options I had, sadly none suit me at this time. I asked if they did Pay pal and the very polite answer I got was no. and it wasn't being considered as an option for the future. Being as I don't have a credit card and don't want to buy their software to gain access I have had no choice but to subscribe somewhere else with my Debit card. Early days yet and the site seems Ok but Ancestry was always my first choice. Perhaps Ancesrty has become such a succesfull company that they can afford to lose subscriptions. Lets hope that in the future they have a re think.... Lincsbabe

I had ummed and aahhhd about whether or not to get a credit card, and I finally succombed. What finally tipped the balance was when I went to pay for something I bought on another totally unconnected site and found they wouldn't take my Switch debit card either. So I am now the proud owner of a credit card, that will only be used for when I cannot pay any other way.
I have just come off the phone with Ancestry after renewing my membership (I had hoped they might just have renewed it from my debit account - but no, it ran out midweek).
I had a good old moan about this, mentioned how many people were not renewing their membership and ended up paying £63.96, that's 20% off and LESS than I paid last year . So not all bad then.
Rest assured, as soon as my first statement comes through the door, its getting paid within 24 hours.

At least one of my ancestors was glamorous!

I too have just let my ancestry subscription lapse.
I am anti-credit cards but do have a pre-paid form of credit card - no chance of running up a big bill or having to pay huge interest charges.

Sorry, but I don't understand this way of thinking !
There are several credit cards available which give the option of settling the bill in full by direct debit at the end of the month.
If you buy at the right time, they actually give you a month's interest-free credit. What's so wrong with that ?

I agree with Nick. I was a confirmed member of the 'why the hell do I need a credit card?' club, until it occurred to me that should the company I was dealing with fail to live up to it's rash promise, I could make a claim for refund against the credit card company, and there is of course, that month of free interest.
Apart from large purchases, I seldom if ever use the card apart from one standing order at £9.99 a month and the scaremongering about 'running up huge debts' is only true if you spend money you don't have. Treat a credit card like a purse, if the money isn't in there then don't spend it. I've had my card for 10 years and have never yet paid a single penny in interest purely because I pay it off, in full, each month.
The clue is in the title, it's a 'credit' card - the company extend you the credit with which to buy things and quite reasonably they charge you for the priviledge of using their money. The answer is quite simple - just exercise some self-discipline, it's stupid, 'must have it now' people who let themselves get into debt, and that's hardly the fault of the credit card company.
