Hi everyone,
Frederick J.M. HEALEY is one of my brick walls, and I'd really love some help.
he arrived in NZ about 1864. Two NZ documents indicate that he was born in Staffordshire circa 1841: the 1880 birth certificate of his youngest child, and his 1927 death certificate. The latter source states that he was a Roman Catholic and that his father was an Ironmoulder, but there is no record of his parents names or other details on any document I have.
On the birth certificate of his eldest child his occupation was 'sailor', so he presumably arrived in New Zealand as a crewman. Family legend suggests that he ran away to sea as a teenager, was in India at the time of the Mutiny (1857), worked on slave ships, and met his future wife Elizabeth STURTON on board a ship to NZ. They married in 1865.
Elizabeth STURTON was the daughter of John Sturton, a lacemaker at Arnold NTT, and Mary PALING. In the 1841 Census for Arnold, John, Mary and their family were all working/living at P & J Frosts Lace Factory at the corner of Spout Lane.
Frederick and Elizabeth had seven children, the first born at Auckland AKD NZ before they moved to Westland (WLD) in the South Island and having their remaining children.
Any suggestions gratefully received.
Many thanks, riley

1841 Census: Have you come across this family from Handworth/Soho in Staffordshire? They appear to be Healey on Original. Maybe quite wrong: I think the father is down as a "Pen maker"

If you want a pointer the family is on IGI
Frederick (and the rest) appear to have been born in Birmingham , Warwickshire and christened at St Phillips.
Was this a catholic church in the 1840s?

Hi guys,
Many thanks for this. I've found them on the IGI, big family! It's quite possible my Frederick Healey could have believed he was born at STS not WAR or elsewhere, but I can't see any way of proving that this is his family (looks very tempting, though!).
I have no idea about the Church, sorry.
Thanks again, riley

Hi Just to confirm Bpt. can be seen on IGI Batch number C041798 Frederick Heeley Born 12.8.1839 Bpt. 12.11.1839 son of Clement & Emma Heeley.
On the Individual Results page (showing the above details) if you click on Source Call No. you will see that St. Phillip's Cathedral Birmingham was C of E.
Re the 1841 Census - HO107/980/2 Folio 47 Oakhill, Parish of Handsworth, Staffordshire I can confirm that the Father's name is written - Clement. None of them were born in Staffordshire except the youngest child Esther who is aged 4 months from this you know they moved from Birmingham Area after Frederic was bpt Nov 1839 and as the Census was taken June 6/7 1841 were there in March1841 when Esther was born. Only problem is Father's occupation "Pen M". By 1851 Census they are living Hunters Lane, Aston, Warwickshire HO 107/2062 Folio 195 Sch 35 When Clement (the Father) is shown as Nail Manufacturer they have a Cook and a Housemaid.
By 1861 they are back in Staffordshire:- RG9/2019 Folio 105 & 206 Sch 100 Rose Hill, Handsworth, Staffordshire Clement (the Father) is shown Iron Founder Employing 40 Men 3 Girls. Frederick is still living at home occupation - Clerk.
1871 Census RG10/3161 Folio 14 Sch 92 Wylde Green, Sutton Coldfield Frederic is still living with his Father, is is aged 31 married and a Merchant. The Wife is not listed in the household.
Did Frederick and Elizabeth marry in N.Z? Have you looked on Passenger Lists?
Cannot find at present on 1881 Census. Spendlove.

If Frederick is still single with his father in 1871, I doubt if it's the same one arrived in NZ in 1864???

I don't know if it will help but there are two references to FJMH on what appears to be the marriage of two daughters. I found them by googling his full name and went to mlfhs.org.uk. Click on Anglo-Scots and go down to the marriage database and click on the section containing Healey.

Hi everyone,
Very sorry I couldn't get back on in the past week but it was frantic at work.
The mlfhs.org.uk references are mine, sent in a couple of years ago. I have not been able to find the arrival of either F.J.M. HEALEY or Elizabeth STURTON to NZ, nor any marriage event. The only record I have for the latter is second-hand, as recorded on the birth certificates of two of their daughters and Healey's 1927 death certificate. I suspect that they either married on board ship or didn't marry at all (it wasn't unknown and when moving around early NZ, who would ever know?).
I think that Spendlove's 1871 Census information confirms that Frederic HEELEY is not F.J.M. HEALEY. Added to that is the information that he was baptized C of E, when he was buried as RC.
Thanks for all your help.
