Rose Wallis Weymouth 1901 census
« on: Thursday 10 January 08 11:39 GMT (UK) »

I have a marriage cert for Rose Wallis 1915 Weymouth age 26 which gives her father as Charles Wallis, Gardener. (Her husband was George Casswell).

I located a suitable family in Wyke Regis with wife Mary Ann Hallett, BUT I have just been informed that she had brothers killed in WW1 whose names were William, Frederick, Thomas and Norman...which doesn't match this family. Perhaps some of these are middle names?

Can anyone locate a family in 1891/1901 in the Weymouth area with father Charles, dau Rose and sons as noted above?

Many thanks

Hi John

I found the same 1891 family as Geoff - but I'm thinking this is probably the one you found as well. I also found them in 1881, but none of the names you mentioned for sons seem to be there. I cannot find this family in 1901 & I cannot find another Rose Wallis. Are you sure about the validity of the WWI information?

Trish

Edit: The only Rose Wallis on FreeBDM born Dorset is this one

Hi John and Hi Trish

No sign of the sons noted but there is a birth of Thomas Wallis March 1872

Weymouth 5a 342.  You would need the birth cert in order to find out names of parents, but the info you gave is a bit uncertain.

Thanks Folks,

Yes, the family listed above is the one that I think best fits the Rose/Charles data.

I received the 4 names from Rose's son born 1919 who says he was given those 4 middle names to commerate his mothers brothers killed in WW1.. However, I also cannot find a reference to those names in the WW1 casualities (although quite a number have no family links)...

So I am left with a bit of a mystery. The two possibilities that I can think of are (a) there is a possibility that the boys were known by a middle name
(b)  some or all my be the fathers brothers, but I have not been too successful there either (c) the family recently moved to Weymouth from elsewhere.

Can anyone check if Charles Wallis was listed as a Gardener in Weymouth in 1901??

There is no obvious Charles Wallis listed as gardener. Without knowing dob and place it is an almost impossible task. There are just too many Charles Wallis listed.
I also looked in CWG records but apart from a TOM WALLIS Dorsetshire Regiment died 23/08/1918 aged 30 Vis en Artois, again there is nothing obvious.

I am a bit at a loss on progressing further.

The Charles Wallis in the Family above was born Q2 1844 in "Wyke, Dorset"

If that helps.

Yes but I think that is already the Charles Wallis I have given you for 1891 and as Wallace on 1901

Yes, your are right...we know he was there, I guess I don't have his occupation recorded when I was getting 1901 data.

Do you have it?

Thanks, thats useful.

Lets see in 1901 he was 57...so bricklayer seems reasonable but I guess by 1915 at age 71 Gardener might also be reasonable.

I guess we just keep poking around and see what else can be added to the puzzle.

Thanks for your help
