Could it be the name of a House/property? Was the wedding date near a census - could this be checked for where they were living?

Hi Trish,

The marriage was 1884.  In 1881 the bride was in the Westbury Workhouse and in 91 they are living in Edington.

Here's the part that's puzzling me.

My trusty 1957 Road atlas comes up trumps again Cheesy

Googling Birchanger Wiltshire - seems it's only a farm. Worth checking out

http://www.old-maps.co.uk/

Put Westbury Wiltshire in search engine then keep clicking on top right hand corner till Birchanger comes in to view

The gentleman concerned was a farm labourer so it's possible he was employed at Birchanger Farm.  I can't think of a way to prove it though.

I would think it likely he was working there, living in one of their cottages. Where is he in 1881?

I can't see him anywhere either - in fact can only see him on the 1891 Huh Have you found him on any other census?
Jan Wink

OK I can see him in 41 and 51.

I would agree with Jan - he was probably living in one of the cottages & I think the marriage record is part of the proof - the birth of one of the children of the marriage may confirm further.

The names on the 1891 image are slightly different as per above
1891 Village name Tinhead
George Hemmens head M 55 Ag lab Somerset Winchcombe
Julia do wife M 32 Wilts Tinhead
Walter H Drewett son 14 ag lab Wilts Tinhead
Mary A do daur 12 Wilts Finhead
Elizabeth S do daur 11 Wilts Westbury
Lillian Hemmens do daur 6 scholar Wilts Bratton
Edith do daur 5 scholar Wilts Edington
Ethel A do daur 3 Wilts Edington
Charles W do son 1 Wilts Tinhead
Amelia A Drewett Lodger S 23 Wilts Tinhead
Elcie Drewett do Lodger 2 mo Wilts Tinhead

Wilfred (Walter?) Mary Anne and Elizabeth are with Julia in 1881. The birth record for Lillian may be the best to find where the family were living after the marriage and I am still looking for George in 1881  Sad

Was George listed as single or widower on the marriage certificate?

Hi Trish,

On the cert he is recorded as Widower but I have been unable to find details of the previous marriage  Huh

Jan,

What details do you have for 41 and 51?

A little more detail.  The certificate shows him as 47 years in July 1884 which would give him a d.o.b of 1837 - it records his father as Charles, a shoe maker.

For a long time I had thought this George was George Upshall Hemens b1835 Winscombe Somerset [from PRs] though I'm now sure that this is not the correct George as all sources cite William as the father, not Charles. [51 has him transcribed as George Harcus on Ancestry].

He's proving to be a bit of a headache!

Regards,

Adrian.

In that case I haven't found him in 41/51 as he is with father William! I'll keep looking
