Florence Mine - Egremont

Trystan and I were lucky to find ourselves at Florence Mine this summer.

We took a photo of this poster in the hope that it may be of use to others.

Hi Sarah

I was lucky enough to go down the mine 2 years ago and I can truthfully say that it was the most fantastic thing I have ever done (except having my son) and also the most terrifying.

To be where my grandfather and gr grandfather actually worked was beyond words and I am now sitting looking at a small piece of iron ore that just happened to fall into my coat pocket [please don't tell anyone].

I also have a photo of the pit head as my screen save.

Regards

Of course the Florence Mine has been closed for some time - problems over who foots the bill pumping the water out. Sad

The Group is looking for a new home http://www.florencemine.co.uk/page.php?i=1

What sad news Geoff  Cry It is such a shame when you find a glorious haven as this, full of history with so much to offer that they had to close over funding.

Good job that we went when we did half pint.

I'm just down the road from Egremont, you should have popped in for a cuppa Grin

I actually sat next to the man who does all the look-ups for that poster, in our record office.  We were both sitting on the fiche-readers engrossed in our stuff for ages.  A lady walked in, who lives in Canada, and was here for her book-publishing about the William Pit disaster.  She saw his name on the register, and he went over to talk to her, they had already met.  Then she saw my name on it, but didn't know what I looked like.  So he came over and asked me if it was me.

It was strange meeting her, after passing info back and forward.  Then I realised that I knew the man as well, and had exchanged e-mails with him about relatives at Florence Mine.  We had a good crack, and found out that we had a mutual friend who has written another book.

It's a small world isn't it? Grin
