James MANTON 1861 census
« on: Sunday 13 January 08 10:20 GMT (UK) »

Hello

James MANTON was born 15th May1827 in Bedfordshire - His wife Emily MORRIS died in 1854 leaving a baby [my gt gt gt grandmother, Rosa MANTON] who was raised by a maternal Aunt.

Is James MANTON in any 1861 census - he would be about 34 by then?  I have completely lost him - he was a carpenter by trade if that is of any help.  I think he continued to pay his sister-in-law for the child's upkeep so I have heard.  But as far as I know never contacted his daughter?

Thank you, Ricky

How quick was that?!

There was gossip that James had killed himself in grief - glad to know that is not true and he would have been in touch with daughter, Rosa MANTON in Kempston. I think.

So many thanks - because I think their family history was happier than I had feared.

All the best to you and your ''best friend" - my sister has just had her dalmation put down and she & her husband are "gutted" but the dog had spinal cancer and was in a bit of pain.  They still have another dog to fuss over - I am a ''cat woman'' myself!

Cath
Ps: Do you have James MANTON in 1871?

Hi Cathy

I carnt see him on any census after the 1861, there is a couple of death regs in Bedford for a John Manton, one in 1861 Sept Quarter, and one in 1864 Sept quarter, both with no age given

Hi Cathy

I think thats the only two possible deaths as the other deaths have when they were born against them, and none of them tally with the birth year of your James Manton

Thanks, Ricky

It did occur to me that James MANTON may have moved on -or died!   I am so glad to have found him in 1861 [thanks to you] at the moment.  So am happy at present..I will chase the poor bloke in 2008 - no doubt.

Hi Cathy

I would think when one of the local Bedfordshire people come on line they might be able to throw more light on the subject.

regards
