St. John's School/Plymouth query
« on: Wednesday 09 January 08 02:55 GMT (UK) »

Is St. John's School still in use today, and do they/or someone have pictures taken in 1916 of the students.  My mother and her sister attended the school at that time.  The photo I have is in postcard form, and in very bad shape.

Hi Raa:

Many thanks for the informational web-site on Plymouth.  It seems that the schools are all almagamated under the local school board, I couldn't find a specific mention of St. Johns' School except under the churches information.  The only St. Johns' Church to have an attached school was also known as the Hooe School, although my mother never called it that.  We visited Plymouth way back in 1964, when the last relatives were getting on, and mum wanted to revisit her childhood haunts.  Fortunately I photographed her and the aunt's outside the school.  Many thanks again, I really enjoyed looking through it.

Hi again:

Will do raa.  Hope you are successfull in your search, any information for myself will be greatly appreciated.  While looking through the Plymouth website, I was particularly interested in the WW1 information.  My grandparents had emigrated to Canada just before the outbreak, and grandad just had to go home to enlist, so that's why my mother and aunt went to that school.  Mum told me many stories about how she and her sister were always getting the switch together, because if one was crying, the other one would too, so they both got it.  When grandad was discharged in 1919, they came right back to Canada.  The destruction of all those beautiful buildings downtown during WW2 was too bad.  I remember being impressed with the newness of the city centre while there, but now I value the historical aspect more.  Homebody

Hi Raa:

I'm sorry to be so late with your reminder, but good hunting at the record office.  I'm afraid that I got tied up at the grandchildrens' Hockey games earlier  this evening.  Hope you find what you are looking for. Homebody
