  Searching for Mary Bryan (family also spelled Brien and Brian) born 1859 at Kings Cliffe, Northants,  who is last located as being at Kings Cliffe on the 1871 census return.  Not traced on the 1881 census.  The IGI interprets the baptism as reading Mary Alice Bryan, to me it looks more like Mary Ann Bryan.  A Mary Alice Bryan married (poss to William Bellamy) in Melton Mowbray in 1890 ; another Mary Alice Bryan married (to either Arthur Stroud or Alfred Myrton) in Croydon in 1878;  if bride's ages established could eliminate or count as possibles.  If she married as just Mary Bryan there are lots of brides of this name.

She is in the 1861 census as Mary Ann.
There is a probable birth registration for a Mary Ann in the Oundle registration district which includes Kings Cliffe in the Sep q of 1859

There is a marriage for a Mary Ann BRIAN in Oundle district in 1881 that might be her.

Others on page are CAtherine Dolby, George William Todd, and William Saunt

There is a George Todd and wife CAtherine (no kids) in 1881 census in Kngs Cliffe.
So looks like MAry ANn married William Saunt
Cant find them in 1881 at present

Thanks lizdb and mgeneas:  Mary did marry William Saunt - verified from 1881 census return.   Now discovered they moved counties immediately afterwards and changed their surname (or at least from then on it was recorded differently) to Saunters and then Saunderson.  The company Ancestry.Com has them listed as coming from Northumberland, which is false of course (and misleading).  Many thanks.

I still can't find them in 1881, but can see them in 1891 as Saunderson and 1901 as Sauntson. I wouldn't necessarily call it a change of name, merely that the census enumerators wrote down what they thought they heard.

And in 1891  - when it's written North's I think I can understand why it can sometimes be transcribed as Northumberland! (at least Kings Cliffe is spelt correctly). In the same way that there are a lot of Hunts transcribed as Hants (or even worse, Hungary) on Ancestry. Just something that you need to be aware of when searching.

Thank you for reply.  Now trying to establish in which parish(es) in Oundle Reg Dist Mary Ann Brian (and her sister Elizabeth in 1883) were married.  Was not Kings Cliffe.
