Burial places in Hulme?
« on: Friday 11 January 08 07:57 GMT (UK) »

Hi

I have been trying for a long time to find the death of my 3xgt grandfather, without success so far.

He appears in the 1861 census with his family living in the Parish of St Philips, Hulme, but not in the 71 census although his wife and daughter are there albeit not in the same address but still in the same parish. On this census she is a widow.

Unfortunately i cannot find the death of her husband in any list so i thought i would look for a burial place instead in case he was mistranscribed on the death list.

Doea anyone have any idea what graveyards were open to burials around the Hulme area ( he doesn't appear to be in Southern Cemetery or Philips Park as i have checked these lists)
Any help would be fantastic, his name was Francis McCall and was born c 1815
Thank you
Andrea

Hi Andrea
Hope this is helpful, if not a little tedious Roll Eyes
this link should open to churches within 3 mile radius of hulme. The gravestone symbols on the left indicate a graveyard. Caution though i've spotted at least one that has never had a graveyard but is listed as having one.

Best of luck

Try Rusholme road cemetery on the border of Ardwick and Chorlton on Medlock. It was a fair size cemetery. Its about 20 minutes walk from Hulme.

What address was shown in his last census and the one his wife was shown as a widow?

Hi Mike

Thank you for answering, do you know who holds the records for Rusholme Rd cemetery?

In 1861 they lived at 5 Jones St, Hulme in the parish of St Philip

In 1871 his wife and daughter live at 52 Newcastle St, still in St Philips parish.

thanks Andrea

Now I remember this church. My brother went to the school attached to the church and we lived around the corner from it on Chester street,
the church is on the east side of Newcastle street. Jonesstreet is also on the east side .
Contact me at  morrisindatrogers.com. I have saved this large map section for you.

My grandmother was a barmaid at the Transvaal pub on Newcastle street during the 2nd world war.

There is no grave yard at St Phillips. To locate info on Rusholme road Cemetery contact the Manchester Central Library.

All the houses on Newcastle and Jones were blown up during the war. The church survived though. I assume they were trying to bomb the Gaythorn gasworks at the north end of Newcastle , but missed.
