Arnold Family - East Kent
« on: Saturday 22 December 07 14:33 GMT (UK) »

Hello,
I have 4 marriages of Matsons into the Arnold family -
1) 8th October 1714 at Ringwould Robert Matson and Ann Arnold. I believe this Ann could have had a father named John.
2) 7th December 1767 at East Langdon James Matson and Ann Arnold (This couple are my direct ancestors)
3) 6th April 1799 at St. Margarets-at-Cliffe Elizabeth Matson and Charles Arnold.
4) December 1915 at Eastry Louis Matson and Hilda Grace Arnold.
Although these marriages are in a similar area, as yet I've not been able to link any of the above Arnolds together.
I wonder if anyone has anything further about the Arnolds which might help establish if they were from the same family?
In particular I would very much like to find more about Ann Arnold who married my ancestor in 1767.
Any ideas anyone?

This could be your first Ann Arnold:

Ringwould
Baptism

Anne Arnold 2nd Jul 1691  D/o John
She's the only Ann/Anne Arnold shown.
(John had another 10 children baptised late 1600s/early 1700s)

You probably don't want another Ann Arnold Grin but I've found one!
At least she isn't marrying a Matson, so not likely to be one of yours Smiley
Ann ARNOLD of East Langdon
Married 21st Feb 1786 in East Langdon
To William SOLES of Nonnington.

Hello again Betty and a
Very Happy Christmas
 to you  Cheesy
That's the first Ann on my list confirmed (1691). Many Thanks.
The second 'new' Ann who you've found at East Langdon who married in 1786, is interesting as my second Ann married James Matson at East Langdon in 1767.
So we have two ladies in the same Parish with the same name marring within 19/20 years of each other.
I wonder if either them are connected by descent from the John Arnold of Ringwould who you've found had 11 children in the late 1600s/early 1700s? It certainly seems a possibility.
I wonder if anyone has any more about John Arnold and his descendants? Fingers crossed.

There are several ARNOLD & MATSON CCC wills listed on this site

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mrawson/cc_a.html

Wills can be very useful when sorting out families.

There are several ARNOLD & MATSON CCC wills listed on Margaret Rawson's site

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mrawson/cc_a.html

Wills can be very useful when sorting out families.

Thanks bearkat.  I've checked it through and there look to be a couple of possible relevant Arnold entries -
Arnold, James.  Dover. Made  1823. Probate  1825.  69/180b Canterbury Consistory Court. As River, where I have James born (1740) is adjacent to Dover, is this possibly the James who married Margaret Kingsford?
Arnold, James.  St Margaret's at Cliffe. Made  1825. Probate  1831.  69/366b Canterbury Consistory Court. Could this be the James, born in St. Margarets-at-Cliffe in 1769, who married Elizabeth Hartnett?

These look as if they could be relevant to 'my' Arnolds, however probably not directly to the Ann who married James Matson in 1767. However with the holiday period now with us, I guess it's a wait until the new year. I will keep my fingers crossed for any news about my direct Ann Arnold ancestor - although this could lead to some accidents during the eating of Christmas Dinner Roll Eyes
Thanks again,
Roger

Oh dear, there are loads of Arnolds in the area!
I'm afraid I would like the other 10 children please Betty.
I have found a John Arnold who married Hannah Christian on the 19th July 1677 at St. Margarets-at-Cliffe.  Hannah was christened in St. Margarets-at-Cliffe 7th January 1659. I'm wondering if they could be the parents of the 11 children? Ringwould is next door. Do any of the christenings mention the mother's name?

Happy New Year

Hi Roger & Happy New Year
Just to let you know I'm not ignoring you Grin
When I shake off this post-Christmas/New Year lethargy, hopefully this weekend Grin I'll look-up the other 10 baptisms for you.

Betty

Thanks Betty.
No hurry. I know what you mean though. It's amazing how getting back to 'normal' seems to involve almost as much as getting ready for Christmas!

Ringwould Baptisms
All children of John Arnold, no mother's name mentioned, obviously not considered important enough Angry

Elizabeth  25? Nov 1679
Susannah  24th Feb 1683/4
Hannah  20th Jan 1685/6
Edward  29th Apr 1688
Anne  2nd Jul 1691
Sarah  2nd Jul 1693
Richard  10th Sep 1710
John  15th Jun 1711
John  11th Nov 1716
Henry  7th May 1721
Joseph  23rd Nov 1722

I can't see a Death for the first John (1711) to account for another child with the same name.
There's a Death for an Edward Arnold 2nd Mar 1710/1, another for a Hannah Arnold 24th Jan 1711/2, another Edward Arnold 27th Dec 1712, a Susannah Arnold 26th Mar 1723, a Henry Arnold 1st Jun 1724.  No ages given, so no way of knowing if these are the deaths of John's children.

Looking at the preview, it looks as if I've repeated myself with Anne & Sarah, 2nd Jul. I haven't, that's what's transcribed Smiley  (it's always a good idea to double-check Grin)

Hope this helps
Smiley

As always - many, many thanks Betty.
As to linking the Arnolds up, still no luck but with the information so far I have strong hopes.
