hi all. i'm new on rootschat so didn't know where to post this but here goes:
my relative Adam Fagan moved from Ireland to england sometime between his bith in c.1836 and the 1861 census.
he was in the army by 1861 and on 61 census is down as patrick fagan but right age and p.o.b and on 71 census is timothy Fagan right age and p.o.b. i beleive this is him despite changes of first name as he is still in the same regiment etc,age is correct, p.o.b is correct and he marries the next year in the same place. on following census his p.o.b changes between Ireland (helpful) to leivry? and newry.
Is there anyway to trace him before 61? he would be too young for army in 1851 and judging by the constant name changing, i don't think i have much chance. to top this off, his fathers name LOOKS like adam or adain on his marriage certificate but i can't find one on any previous census'. i know bit long winded way of asking but anyway at all i can find him or where he was born without going to ireland? lol
thanks. leanne.

Civil registration of births, deaths and Catholic marriages in Ireland began 1864 (from 1845 for Protestant marriages) so for earlier information you need to search for church records (if they still exist). First complete census for Ireland is 1901. Only small fragments of earlier ones for various places survive. To look for any sort of records in Ireland you really need to know the family's religion and where they lived (at least parish if not townland but not just a county).
You might try finding his discharge records from the army, as that will hopefully tell you where he was born. Do you know when approximately he left the army?
