Austin, Black Lion Hill
« on: Sunday 13 January 08 19:41 GMT (UK) »

I've just started digging on my mothers side...and come up with an anomaly!

There was always a family story that my maternal grandfathers lot had a dyers and cleaners on Black Lion Hill in Northampton...I've had a look on Historical Directories and there is a Robert Austin rt dyer and cleaner at no 5 in 1890. In the 1876 directory, he is also there, in bold type!

Now my grandfather William Edward Victor , for whom I can find no birth record on line, moved to Middlesex at some point and was a dyer and cleaner in Wood Green.

Has anyone else got these Austins and can we combine Robert and WEV pse?

My grandfather died in 1945 two weeks before my parents wedding. He appears not to have served in either world war, and deffo not in WW2

Hi Sandy,

My grandmother was Charlotte Kate (??Catherine) (nee Attridge), but she did have a sister Annie Attridge who became Annie Roberts.

I think the Attridge's came from High Easter in Essex...

Possible birth for her in 1898, Edmonton 3A470 Sept Q, and 1901 census aged 2 in Wood Green with Father Frederick, mother Kate, and siblings  William, Frederick, and Annie. She had x2 other sisters Alice and Nell.

Thanks...

Well I am looking at the family from the censuses.

Found Robert in 1871 upto 1891.

At the moment none of his sons have a son named William Victor.

They are moving around the country.  Smiley

Will keep looking.

Hi Sandy ....Taking Robert from the Census you have there ...how about this for the link?

William Edward Victor...born in Newton Abbott, Devon in Sep Q 1902 (5b 115)

A long way from Northamptonshire - - -  but if you find Robert Austin in the Census from 1881 where he gives profession as Dyer at Black Lion Hill (RG11/1554/74/4) you see he has a son Wm A Austin.

in 1891 Robert is still with Martha and Wm A is shown as Wm Augustus.
RG12/1202/122/5

in 1901 he is again shown as William Augustus Austin born Northamptonshire but living in Devon (Newton Abbott) RG13/2059/48/8.  Occupation Dyer

SO - It is my theory that Robert is William Edward Victor's Grandfather!

Nice one.  Smiley

Oooh well done you two!  Cheesy

I had been pointed towards Devon by a friend, but I dismissed it as tosh;  I was sure that my lot wouldn't swan off down there for no apparent reason!

Well at least I'm still a county boy even if they meandered for a while!

Now, why did they go to Devon, and then to Wood Green?Huh?

Funny, as mum was born in Wood Green and came to Northampton with the Land Army, and the wheel turned full circle!

At least I have an excuse to be out of county!!!

So, apart from my cousin, whom I know, I wonder how many other Austins are still in the Shire?Huh

There was also a rumour that a previous Austin ancestor was mayor of Northampton at some point..... Grin

Hi Graham

You could maybe try "mgeneas" aka Marilyn here who has a list of the Mayors of Northampton.

I do too just can not find it at the moment.

The list of Mayors of Northampton 1835-1990 is found in the book

Northampton 1835-1985 Shoe Town, New Town

There is no Austin in the list

Thanks Marilyn, but the rumour was it was somewhat earlier than that, and there is supposed to be a shield  or something in the Guildhall...

Graham

The list I had was of Mayors of Northampton (it was not from the noted book).

Wonder who it was then.
