I think I need to go and have a lie down!

Family have said that Josephs father was William, but was not
sure.

But I think this family may have told a few white lies!
Bow Street London Huh

Looks like they are all related!
How BIG is Smithies Garth?

almost certain this is joseph in 1871
if the 1861 census with him in it posted by dave francis is correct his wife was sarah
something must have happened to her because he has re-married.
1871 RG10/4512/110/36.
joseph hillyard age 41. b. leeds. occ. smith in foundry.head.
eliza  age 45. b. leeds. wife.
walton shackray hillyard age 18. b. ditto. occ. driller in iron foundry. son.
mary age 13. b. ditto. occ. flaxmill hand. daughter.
henry age 9. b. ditto. son.
clara age 2. b. hunslett. daughter.
william smith age 25. b. horton,yorkshire. lodger.
living at 19,anchor place,hunslett,leeds,yorkshire.

wondering if eliza was married before to a mr.shackray
and walton should be down as stepson rather than son.
will have a look.

there is a death of a sarah hillyard in 1863 in the sub district of leeds south-east

in 1863 in the church of st.peters, leeds marriage between joseph hillyard and eliza thackray

so it looks as if his first wife sarah died and very shortly afterwards he re-married.

Hi

I would like to thank everyone on this thread for
all their help, Sorry the information was making me quite
dizzy last night.

The information seem to been bringing alot of questions.

Did Wlliam and Joseph and wife come up for work as brothers
did later father William join them?

Was Sarah the second wife of William the elder?

Where do the missing children go - they seem to flit in and
out?

The line I am looking into stems from James see (1851 census
details above), so David is a brother or half brother
to James not Father.....but a least it proved family correct
that James's Father was William

Just checked the CD rom version of the 1841 Census
(How does anyone transcript that!)

Luckily Joseph is actually 12, so not another brother to find!

Checked the reference to Bow Lane Huh

Not sure at present certainly Hillyards in London at this time
one actually sentenced at the Old Bailey Shocked
But also a Bow Lane around the corner from Smithies Garth,
So when someone asked where was he born, did he
say Bow Lane, asked "wheres that" jokingly replied London
when there one around the corner! Wink

Further investigation is needed there.

Jinks

Thanks everybody for all their hard work
