Lily Lynan
« on: Sunday 13 January 08 21:08 GMT (UK) »

I was wondering if someone with access to the 1901 British census would check the following:

I am looking for Lily Lynan born 28 June 1896 in Normantown, Derbyshire.  The spelling of her last name is in question as I have seen Lynan, Lynham and Lindham on Ancestry.com documents, but the Lynan looked like it was in her own handwriting.  She eventually married Arthur Calvert Ranney.

Thank you.

By the way the p.o.b. is (as on the census) "Normanton"

Not Normantown

Thank you Suz.  I got Normantown from the border crossing document,  (Canada to US at Niagara Falls).  Those customs agents must have put their own spin on it.  Is Normanton considered West Yorkshire?

Thanks again.

No it's Derbyshire -the outskirts of  Derby -as father was a Coal Miner he would probably have moved to work at mine in Yorks -as so many of them did from the Derbyshire area.

Daughter Ellen was b Chesterfield, which is quite a way from Normanton - and  was a mining area.

Unles, of course, Lily was born in South Normanton - that is near Ripley Derbys and not so far from Chesterfield - and more of a mininf area than Normanton Derby

I'll have a check where Dad lived when he was young, as he stated b Normanton -I'll see if I can find which one it is

Thanks very much Suz

Using that information I found dad on the 1881 census.  It lists his birth place as "Temple Normanton, Derby".  Large family - 9 kids and a brother-in-law.

Alfred was born South Normanton (near South Wingfield and Ripley Derbys) BMD reg district is Chesterfield.

South Normanton was a mining area (right up until a few years ago when they closed the collieries)

So I guess Lily was born S Normanton

I looked at 1871 -it could have been T Normanton - am convinced it was Temple Normanton -as this is very close to Chesterfield -and the reg district is Chesterfield

Should have realised -if it had have been South Normanton then the reg dist would have been Belper.

So I think we've solved it -they were born at Temple Normanton!

Do you want 1871 with Alfred and his parents? -and grandparents!

No, I should be able to take it from here.  Thank you very much Suz for all your help.

Looks like they never did shake the brother-in-law, in fact in 1871 they had his dad living with them too!
