I'm at my wits end, here, and really hope the brains out there will have some great ideas
My great grandfather was Hezekiah Paddock, born 1852 in Walsall, parents Phineas Paddock and Rebecca Cater.
I've got him: • on the 1861 census as Ezekiah in Walsall. • on the 1901 census as Isaac Paddock in Mansfield. • on his marriage certificate in 1903 in Nottingham (Isaac again) • on his death cert in 1922 -- this time as Hezekiah, in Mansfield.
But WHERE was he between 1861 and 1901?
Family legend will have it that he was in South Africa and that he fought in the Boer War. But I'm not convinced.
Anyone got any ideas? Clues where he could have been? He wasn't rich. He was a mason and a Methodist lay preacher. And I think that by the time he and Mary Ann got married in 1903 they'd had at least two children. (Not that any of those statements are linked, necessarily!)
