1841 census and...?
« on: Sunday 13 January 08 22:14 GMT (UK) »

Hi I'm wondering if there is a James and Jane ARNOLD couple in Sussex - I'm guessing Brighton or Portslade...
Both would have been b. no later than 1782 so would likely be close to their 60s. I think at least some their children were living in Tunbridge Wells at the time but the parents may have remained in Sussex. 3 sons were carpenters so perhaps James was as well??

Much thanks for your time,

Hello Ard

I have been unable to locate a couple James & Jane on the 1841 census but have found a Jane Arnold living in Bosham Street, Bosham:

Jane Arnold     70     Born in county
Ann     "           36         "
John     "            1         "

HO107 1099 7 8 30 2

Is this yours?

Hi Ard

There is only 1 James Arnold marrying a Jane in the Sussex Marriage Indexes:

Location: Brighton, East Sussex,  Date: 24 Feb 1802:
Groom: James ARNOLD, bachelor
Bride: Jane BROWN, spinster
Both of this Parish, Married by Banns.

Looks like it is in the correct time frame - so could be useful

Thank you both for looking -

Amanda, I couldn't say if that is the one or not, unfortunately. But Free bmd death's indicate that Jane Arnold wasn' t too uncommon so there is as good of a chance that it is as isn't! With as little info as I have, I'd almost need to have them both together. I don't know if either were alive in 1841.

Chris, I had discovered the marriage of Jane and James  on the IGI - it is in fact that's how I got their names. I guess the marriage index doesn't have their parents names or if they were of that parish? I had been working with the name Jane Brown Arnold as an ancestor of my daughter who married George Arnold. Since her mother's maiden name turned out not to be Brown but Potter, and using other clues I was able to find her paternal grandparents! It's so fun playing the detective!

At least I now have that neither had been previously married. The IGI has the christening of 3 sons at Edburton so I don't know if they lived there or maybe one of them was from there. In the censuses, Bristol was noted as the childrens' (after they had married) place of birth except for one, it changed later to Portslade.

Thanks again,
ard

Ard

Sorry, but at that time frame parents names were not included in the register.

I did put 'Both of this Parish' and 'Married by Banns' on the info I gave you.

Ys, that is helpful  (I hadn't taken in both of the parish part)as it's more that on the IGI listing  Smiley

Is married by Banns significant - I thought it was par for the course at the time... I admit I'm not entirely sure what it means. Undecided

Hi Ard

No problems - the way I understand it is:

Married by Banns means that their intention to marry was broadcast in both his and her church (in this case the same church) for 1 month before the actual marriage took place.  Usually the Banns notice was also posted in the notice board on the church door or just inside the church, etc.

Hope that helps
