Quarry Hill
« on: Thursday 10 January 08 22:28 GMT (UK) »

Have found a birth entry on the IGI which states born Quarry Hill Yorkshire.  How would I know which Quarry Hill this is as there appears to be more than one?     Huh

Hi Val,

I know of one near Leeds.  What about trying to find the family in the census,or is it too early for that?

Hi Barb,

Thanks for the reply.  Yes I saw there is one near Leeds and their is also one near Middlesbrough.  Was hoping it was the Middlesbrough one.  I am tracing a birth around 1750s so would not show up in the census.   The name I am tracing is Firth, so is not common in North Yorkshire, but everywhere  else seems to have hundreds of them.

I'm in Middlesbrough - where have you found Quarry Hill?   Huh Huh  Unless it's near Great Ayton

Which name Firth was it?  Perhaps if you click on the batch number it will show the place.  I looked on the county pages on the IGI and Quarry Hill doesn't show up under Yorkshire

Hi Barbara,

I found Quarry Hill on streetmap.co.uk.  The one they refer to as Middlesbrough is the one near Ayton.  The other one is Leeds.    I am looking for Abraham Firth.  Had another look on IGI and found Abraham born 18th May 1753 at Quarry Hill Yorkshire, father John Firth, Mother Ann Dawson. Film number but no batch number.   Then found Abraham Firth born the same day, but christened at St. Peter Leeds, father John Firth.  This one has a batch number.   I don't think this is my Abraham.   He could have moved up to Kirkleatham and married there, but I don't have anything to put it together.    Thanks again.

Just had a look at those, the Quarry Hill ones are member-submitted, not taken by the IGI from the parish registers, so not to be relied on.  The only ones for 1753 with a batch no. from the p.r's are for St.Peter Leeds and Thornhill Dewsbury, so I would imagine the member-submitted Quarry Hill would also be Leeds.

If you could get to a family record centre and look at the film referenced on the IGI site you might see more details of the submitter and the rest of their tree.

Thanks Barbara, I might just do that.  I have several films either ordered in or to be ordered in.  I think I will be at this for at least another year.

Many Thanks
