Hi
Has anybody had access to the payroll mentioned in the Newhouses book by Colin McCourt? If so, how easy is it to access? And is it kept at Whitehaven record office? I would love to find out if my gr x4 grandfather's birthplace was recorded with his records. I know he was born in Ireland, but have no idea which part. It's always the same with Irish family, in my family anyway

hi Geoff
I haven't been up to that end yet, but I went up to the other end just at the start of the Brows last year. It's a real shame that there isn't more of Newhouses left. But I suppose there wasn't as much interest in family history when they knocked it down, and they wouldn't have know how important it would be to so many people.
Thanks for the image.
I noticed the Howgill payroll is down in a couple of places as 1802. This would have been too early for me. Do you happen to know if there are other records of the men who worked in the mines around that time?
I gather you were in the record office when you were here? I may have seen you in there!!
I'll ask next time I'm in there
Thanks

Hi Geoff
No, I definitely didn't notice that car in the car park. How did you manage to maneovre it into the car park, it's not exactly a wide entrance, and the parking spaces are quite cosy as well!!! I think I would have remembered seeing it, what type is it?
When I think, I was only in there on Wednesday night last week. It was the week before I was in quite a few times. I was on 13, printing entries off registers.
Anyway I'll know next time you're in there
