Allison
« on: Monday 14 January 08 11:11 GMT (UK) »

Hi,

I know you all like a challenge so could someone explain this situation for me:-

Mary Ann Mitchell b 1826 in Cumberland firstly married John Allison in 1849. He died so she married William Sumpton/Lumpton in 1860. Mary's father was Alexander Mitchell and her mother was Hannah Allison. Is it possible that John and Hannah were related?Huh

Thanks for any help

Hi Lindy,

Do you have the 1841 census information for all the Allison family? Some birthdates and places would help
You could also do with the John Allison/ Mary Mitchell marriage cert to find John's father's name, or do you know it?

What do we know about John ALLISON?

What proof do we have that Mary Ann married him - just two names side by side on FreeBMD?

Hi Barbara,

Have just sent off for John and Mary's marriage cert.  I have noted on my records, mind you only in pencil is that John's father was also a John born in 1769 in  Lamplugh and that he married Ann Asbridge in 1798 in Isel. I have access to the 1841 census through Ancestry but cannot determine the correct entry.

Hi,
I have seen the entry on the BMD's (marriages) on ancestry. I also know that John Allison died in 1855 and Mary Ann married a William Sumpton in 1860.

Have you seen the 1851 census entry - showing that Mary Ann was apparently unmarried?

If you haven't actually sent for the marriage cert yet, it might be an idea to check the details first as it only shows Mary Mitchell not Mary Ann:

Do you not think this could be wrong especially as she has two boys James and John and their is an entry of the marriage.

then

Alexander MITCHELL married Hannah ALLISON 18 April 1830

(both events at Distington)

She does appear as MITCHELL in 1841

Alexander MITCHELL 40 AgLab, Scotland
Hannah 35
Mary Ann 15
Sarah 10
John 8
Jane 5
Isabella 3
Alexander 1

but not in 1851
Stainburn
Hannah MITCHELL (mar) 49 Labourer, Disington
Mary Ann ALLISON (unm) 24 Lab, Disington
Isabella MITCHELL (dau) 13 Camerton
Alexander MITCHELL (son) 11 Camerton
John ALLISON 5 (gr son) Camerton
James ALLISON (gr  son)2 Camerton

Hi,
Why does one feel two steps forward one back!!!
Ok, I have re looked at the census and now think that Mary's parents were John Mitchell born in 1797 in the parish of Isel, Blindrake etc. and Elizabeth Hewitson born in 1801 Embledon. They married in 1826. Do you think this a better option!!!!!!!

It depends rather on whom you are chasing.  Are we looking for the woman who married SUMPTON/LUMPTON or ... what?

Where are these people in 1861 so I can get a fix on them?

Hi,

I am trying to find everything so consequently confusing the issue.

I have checked the 1861 census for James Allison(shown Allinson), one of John and Mary's sons.  It shows that he is living with William and Mary Sumpton/Lumpton on the actual census but on the typed summary it is displayed as William and Mary Langton living in Stainbourne. Also included are:-
John Allison b1846
Hannah Allison b1851
Isabella Allison b1855
William  one assumes Sumpton b1861

The people and the marriage in Isel are nothing whatsoever to do with your lot.

Mary Ann ALLISON never married until she wed William SUMPTON in 1860.

Mary Ann ALLISON was the illegitimate dau (1826) of Hannah ALLISON who married Alexander MITCHELL in 1830.

She was MITCHELL in the 1841 census, but had reverted to her original name by 1851, where she had two sons but was listed as unmarried.  There followed two daughters -
Births Sep 1851
Allison    Hannah        Cockermouth    25   124
and Isabella.

Then there was William - whether his census age was 4m or 11m, he should have been born in 1860.  If the latter, he may have been christened at Bridekirk (IGI).
