Thanks very much Aghadowey and J.J. for all the responses.
The PANB site is incredible. I discovered it about six months ago and have obtained quite a bit of my Ranney info for that particular generation from it. That Daniel F Johnson left quite a legacy when he passed away. It is also very tough to read - it's amazing the drastic methods these Ranney folks chose to die in so many instances. I read the St John paper notification of those three children drowning; I believe that paper spelled their name Rannie or Rennie. The one I found the most heartbreaking was the account of a two year old who died "in great agony" when he fell into a vat of boiling water.
You folks are amazing with your ability to track down such a diverse group of records so fast. While I confess to already having alot of it, it took me eons to gather what you located in a couple of hours.
Here's how I read what you found:
The log for the brig Latona did show two Williams. My idea has always been that the youngest William had to indeed by Malcolm. I know names were often recycled when children died but with both being very much alive at that point, one name had to be wrong.
By date and age matching, I dated the Tombstone inscription at 1843.
Margaret did marry William Dummer Jarvis, and by doing so, became part of a very storied family in the Toronto area.
The Maria Sargent mentioned on the brig Latona log married Alexander Cartwright Chewett and became part of another very storied family in the Toronto area. The Chewett family and the Jarvis family basically owned the city.
William Parker Ranney and a business partner imported a large amount of wine and other goods from China. This shipment burned up in the Fredericton dockyards before they were able to get their hands on any of it and the two of them fought the government at the time tooth and nail to get back the duties that they had pre-paid - a whopping 37 pounds, eleven shillings and two pence. I wonder what that would equate to in today's financial market.
The William Hocking Ranney mentioned on the log of the Brig Latona, basically disappeared off the face of the earth. He's specifically mentioned in dad's will as "not entitled to any benefit". Makes one wonder what he did to cheese off his father.
Back to Courtney and Emily:
PANB records show an Emily Ranney marrying Charles J. Borton in 1857. These records identify Emily as third daughter of Henry Parke Ranney (could be Parker, and if so is likely related as the Parker name was adopted as a second name by the Ranney family for generations). I wonder if Henry Parker Ranney died and Catherine and William Parker Ranney adopted her. If so, where does Henry Parker Ranney fit in?
Nice to get the information on Courtney. I've got a buddy in Cleveland checking out Courtney from that end and may eventually get some concrete proof that he's the same one mentioned in the 1851NB census.
Questions, questions.
Once again, thank you, both for the info and for indulging me while I rambled on about the adventures of WP Ranney and his kids.
Steve

Sorry, thought for a minute that was the answer. At least you have lots of things in PANB but did notice the name was under various spellings which makes it harder to find them all.

I think there is a very forgiving aspect to that database which allows for "begins with" etc...which should help...
With reference to the business noted above though...Here's a name on the New Navy List of Officer's Service under Masters..... showing perhaps the partner's children married: Pages 150, 151 & 153 ( or so it says, but I only found the one) http://tinyurl.com/yp6eto & Massey's magazine, page 20....maybe about the wine incident http://books.google.com/books?id=rh4AAAAAYAAJ&dq=ranney+%26+sturdee

You're welcome... and I only just read now that there was a newspaper entry for W.P.'s death in 1843 in aghadowey 's 1st reply. I've become a skimmer... J.J.
