Maria in England: http://www.rootschat.com/links/03rm/ The house was then purchased by Edmund Littler Johnson and Mrs Maria Susan Chewett * became its tenant in 1909. Mrs Chewett arrived in England from Canada in 1898. With her were her daughters and youngest son, Albert Ranney Chewett. The son joined the Herkomer Art School and was active in music and painting before turning to photography. His mother and sisters were skilled in wood-working, metal work, lace making and book-binding. Albert bought the estate in 1921 and in 1931 married Violet Georgiana Eila Chewett. She had a talent for music and dancing. The billiard room was converted into a dance studio where Eila taught well into the 1950s. Albert died in 1965 and Eila qualified and practiced as a medical secretary until she was 75. * although she was named Maria Sargeant Ranney ( from IGI extracted) his artwork : http://www.cornucopia.org.uk/html/search/verb/GetRecord/6441 http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=freer&id=I53321 Nice site, but you need to tell them his mother was Maria!

Might that be William Hocking Ranney in 1881 Grand Traverse, Michigan William RANNIE age 58 NEW BRUNSWICK Farmer...parents born Scotland.... with wife Isabella & several children including a William Cole? It isn't unusual for census to have place where raised instead of where born...

IGI submission has a William Rennie born Feb. 21 1821 Chatham, New Brunswick, Canada who died March 26 1886 Traverese City, Michigan....His first wife...Margaret Fenton... Trouble is, this might discount him, however often information is garnered from censuses, which are often wrong...
ie: check this out, that a pedigree file submitted by: Landed Gentry c/o Medieval Families Unit, 50 E North Temple St, Salt Lake City Has William Parker Ranney as born in St John, New Brunswick

You're right about the census info often being wrong - especially with the spelling. I guess it all depended on how literate the individual standing at the door taking down the names was.
Concerning one of your previous links, I managed to obtain a scanned copy of the handwritten last will and testament of William Parker Ranney from the British Government Records website. It's amazing what's out there once you find out where to look.
Here, by the way, is a copy of the wedding announcement for the William Rennie you are referring to:
Daniel F. Johnson : Volume 12 Number 2851
Date April 1 1850 County Northumberland Place Chatham Newspaper The Gleaner and Northumberland Schediasma
The language of the text is the original used in the newspaper entry and as transcribed by Daniel F. Johnson. Records acquired by the Provincial Archives are not translated from the language in which they originate.
m. Chatham (North. Co.) Friday, by Rev John McCurdy, William RENNIE, Newcastle / Miss Margaret FENTON, Chatham parish.
and here's his death announcement:
Daniel F. Johnson : Volume 66 Number 2575
Date April 21 1886 County Northumberland Place Newcastle Newspaper Union Advocate
The language of the text is the original used in the newspaper entry and as transcribed by Daniel F. Johnson. Records acquired by the Provincial Archives are not translated from the language in which they originate.
The 'Grand Traverse Herald' of Traverse City, Michigan announces the death of Wm RENNIE, a native of Douglastown (North. Co.) N.B. He was 65 years old. Mr. Rennie, who took up his residence at Grand Traverse in November 1851 was an agriculturalist, his farm of several hundred acres said to be one of the richest and best in the country.

Holy Mackerel I just reread my last entry and didn't put that the father was thought to be Robert Rannie...so sorry about that Just a thought, have you proof that he was a son of the couple for certain? J.J. Just looked at the 1851 again...using "Rennie" there is a William & a Margaret and it does say "Birth" meaning born there.... http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/censusnb51/SplitView.jsp?id=3349 and there is a Robert on page, but looks more as though the John on page might be father... Sorry about that, should have searched for that spelling before....

I have all kinds of proof that William Robert Hocking Ranney was the son of William Parker Ranney and Catherine Cuthbert. I have proof he was born in Colabah India on 9 January 1823 and came over to Saint John, New Brunswick with his mother and his siblings onboard a ship out of Exeter England called the Brig Latona on 24 May 1834. When you read the will of William Parker Ranney it has a statement "except my eldest son, William Robert Hocking Ranney who is not to be entitled to any share thereof". It goes further to say that the trustees, in lieu of benefit, are to provide William Robert Hocking Ranney 100 pounds as needed. This to me indicates that he either had a falling out with his father or was in some way mentally infirmed and unable to look after his affairs himself. From that point, William Robert Hocking Ranney falls off the face of the earth. Even more curious, I can't seem to locate any school records for William Robert Hocking Ranney.
This other family of Rannie's (or Rennie's) is interesting because of the date of birth and the New Brunswick location but I really don't think the William is the one I'm looking for.
