Myton on Swale Look up 1851 Census
« on: Monday 14 January 08 13:10 GMT (UK) »

I have found James KITCHEN bn Myton on Swale, who may be my great uncle on the 1861/71 census with wife Ann bn Alne.

On the Free BMD there is a marriage of James KITCHEN to Maria COOK Dec qtr 1838 Easingwold.

I have discovered that on both Census's the names seem to be, John, 1841, Maria 1844, Jane 1846, Richard, 1848 Charles 1849 George 1845 Martha William and James.  All born Myton on Swale.

By 1881 Ann KITCHEN is with son Richard and grand daughter Hannah aged 8, still in Myton!

Was he married to Maria COOK?

His wife ANN is 12 years younger than he is on both 1861 and 1871 census's.

Hi both  Smiley

I see on FreeBMD there is one female missing for the page 24-315. Is there Any specific reason why you thought Maria was the bride, Noreen Rose?  Huh

You could contact Northallerton Register Office to see if they'll check the details for you

Thank you ecneps and Tati for your help, I thought that Maria COOK might have been his first wife because of the daughter named Maria.

I researched the wrong family in the first place because my grandparents are not on the 1901 Census.  Anthony KITCHEN and Emma STYAN, who married in Middlesex in 1892.  I purchased a lot of certificates at that time all incorrect.

Now I have to discover the right marriage for James.

Hi

Whilst it is always dangerous to disagree with Tati Roll Eyes, I am not so sure that it is a case of a name being missing but rather a case of there being one too many (Possibly)

Looking at the original image for James Kitchen shown against that reference (and it is a difficult call to make because part of the characters are missing) I would suggest that his reference could be 24 313 and not 24 315.

If you now look only at reference 24 313 as it appears on FreeBMD there are only three names, two female and one male. One of those females is called Ann Steel.

The IGI has an Ann Steel born 1817 in Alne (Batch C073781).

The other two names at reference 24 313, James Haw and Hannah Brown, seem to be married to each other in 1841 (HO107/1353/5 Folio 19 Page 3).

Could someone else please have a look and see what you think ?

Thanks

Hi DS,

That's what I worked out too, the James Kitchen one is definitely 313 in the GRO index

Hi again

I was looking before at the very poor image behind the FreeBMD entry.

I have just looked on the full GRO index (on Ancestry) and the reference for James is undoubtedly 24 313

Hi DS,

Quite right, just checked it again and have submitted the correction on freebmd.

However, I must have originally looked at it on ancestry, this time I checked on findmypast, and the page wouldn't appear, as the last name on it is Kitcham, out of sequence, so it's badly indexed, had to browse the images to get the right one, so I've told them about that too!

Thank you all, very, very much.   I would never have found that marriage without the help of all you kind people on here!

I did research at Northallerton Record Office last year and found these KITCHENS there, I had planned to visit, York Reference Library as I did several years ago years, and search through the BMD's there, for the marriage.

I can't thank you all enough.

Noreen,

You may know this already but the Alne and Myton on Swale registers are held at the Borthwick Institute at The University of York so no need for a trip to Northallerton if you wanted to look them up.

Thank you all for the help with my KITCHEN's.  I applied for the marriage certificate of James KITCHEN and Ann STEEL, immediately.

What a surprise, I received a certificate for James HAW and Hannah BROWN at Myton on Swale Church!!  I have returned it with a copy of my letter which was headed 'Marriage of James KITCHEN to Ann STEEL Dec qtr 1838'

Thank you Pinetree for your advice about the whereabouts of the Registers at Myton on Swale.

I wonder if they will find the marriage for me, as you all did?

Thank you again

...the whereabouts of the Registers at Myton on Swale.

Hi Noreen

I wonder if you also know.....

The Parish Register (transcript) for Myton upon Swale 1654-1812, produced by the Yorkshire Parish Register Society and the Parish Register (transcript) for Easingwold, Raskelf and Myton upon Swale 1812-1837, produced by the Yorkshire Archaeological Society, Parish Register Section are both available online via Ancestry. The latter volume also includes some information dating back to 1598.

If the weather is not conducive to a trip out to look at the registers yourself in York or at Northallerton, someone on Rootschat might be able to find what you are looking for, if you ask us
