Moreman of Gloucester
« on: Monday 14 January 08 13:20 GMT (UK) »

Hi all

Could someone help me trace the lineage of the Moreman (variety of spellings: Mortman Moreman, Mormon etc) family.  I am trying to reverse engineer from 1841 going forward in time in the hope that I can gain a missing clue.  i am looking for the descendents of:

John Moreman (born circa 1800) and his wife Ann.  I know of children Ann(e) (b. 1822), Emily (b 1831) and Jane (b. 1833).  I believe that one of them sired my g.g.grandfather (out of wedlock) who was later called George Edward Williams (marriage certificate - wife Mary Jane Thomas 1880ish).

All lived in Gloucestershire, cirencester or Tetbury at that time.

This looks like the birth of George the grandson found by Barbara

Free BMD - George Mormon September qtr. 1854, Cirencester, vol. 6a, page 288

sending for the certificate will confirm parentage!

Very elusive this family!

In 1851 Anne Moreman, 26, is a house servant in Cirencester - looks like a large estate with many cottages.

HO107/1968 vol 457 page16

1871 George is with his aunt and uncle

John Howard  Head  Mar  40  Retired Draper  Cheshire Nantwich
Emily Howard  Wife  Mar  37         ditto  wife  Glos. Cirencester
James F. Howard  Son  10  Scholar  Glos. Bistol
Charles H Howard  Son  9  Scholar  Glos. Bristol
George Williams  Nephew  15  Chemist Errand Boy Glos. Tetbury
Julia Mormon  Neice Unm  19  General servant  Glos. Cirencester

Winchcombe Terr
Painswick

RG10/2630 vol, 64 page 4

Probably rules out Emily being George's mother  Undecided

Julia Mormon, also with her aunt and uncle in 1871, was the daughter of Henry Mormont (c1825), is he another of John and Ann's children?

Here are the birth/baptisms of children of John and Ann

St. John the Baptist Cirencester

William Moorman born 1st August 1820; baptised 3rd September 1820
Anne Moreman born 29th May 1822;  baptised 30th June 1822
John Henry Moreman born 6th July 1824;  baptised 1st August 1824
George Moreman born 31st August 1826;  baptised 29th September 1826
Arthur Moreman born 26th February 1829;  baptised 25th March 1829
Emily Moorman born 27th November 1830;  baptised 7th January 1831
Jane Moreman born 13th February 1833;  baptised 24th April 1833

I think we can confidently say the Henry in previous post is a son of John and Ann.

No, can't see Jane in 1851, thought I'd found her as a servant, but that Jane was 41 (thought might have been a mistranscribed 14), but I found her as a servant in 1841 aged 25, so not the right one.

Free BMD has a marriage

Jane Moreman December qtr. 1854 Cirencester vol 6a page 651

The only other name on  the page is Giles Gardner, bearing in mind there is usually four names to a page, may not be who she married!  Haven't found them in 1861 census; there is a death of a Giles Gardner June qtr. 1859 Cirencester  Undecided
