help please - brick wall
« on: Monday 14 January 08 14:16 GMT (UK) »

If anyone has any spare time and good ideas I'd be massively grateful. I have a subs to Ancestry so have looked up a fair bit and come to zilch with this.

I cannot find anything about my ancestors William Noble (b. 1855, Sheffield) and his wife Ann Dobson (b. 1856, Wombwell, Yorkshire), before the 1891 census where they are in Barnsley with their children. The oldest was born in 1882 in Wombwell so it seems reasonable they were married late in 1881 or in 1882...

I can't find suitable candidates on the 1881 census, either married or unmarried, and since I don't know when they got married I can't send off for the certificate to find out their fathers' names.

I have found a Jane Dobson marrying a William Noble in Halifax in 1879 but that seems like a wrong name and a bit too far out of the Barnsley area. William was a coalminer by the way.

If anyone clever can suggest likely alternative spellings I would be forever indebted.

Hi Cat,

Birth certificates for William and Ann might help your search.  This might be the registration for Ann:

Ann Dobson   Mar 1857  Barnsley  9c   131

The Barnsley registration district includes Wombwell.

Thank you SO MUCH!!!

I just cannot believe how kind people are on this site.

I promise to return the favours to other Rootschatters when I can.

Now I must go and try to do some work when all I really want to do is chase up these leads...

Hi Tony

One of their offsprings' birth certificate says Ann's maiden name was Dobson.

Cheers
