Have been able to trace my uncle's family in Denmark and they were Jensens and Christensens so don't give up yet. Do you have names and birthdates for all 6 children? when did Peter leave Denmark?

Well, you have a place for Peder at least! http://www.arkivalieronline.dk/default.aspx has LOADS of church records (scanned images).
http://www.ddd.dda.dk/dddform_uk.asp - census search. In 1860 they are in Svendborg, Langelands Nørre, Simmerbølle (Rudkøbing Købstad is in the same area) Rasmus Andersen, 53 (b. Svanninge i Fyn) Jørgine Christensen, 33 (b. Simmerbølle) Peter Christen Andersen, 10, b. Simmerbølle Annie Marie Andersen, 8, b. Simmerbølle Christen Andersen, 5, b. Gylling i Jylland Anthon Andersen, 2, b. Simmerbølle Hans Rasmussen Hansen, 1, fosterchild, b. Rudkjøbing
I believe in 1850 I can see Jørgine Christensen in Stoense (also Svendborg, Langelands Nørre area, unmarried, aged 24), and Rasmus Andersen in the same place (unmarried, aged 43, lists birth as Svinnige, Svendborg Amt). Perhaps you should look in Stoense for the marriage.
In 1845 Jørgine Christensen is with her parents in Simmerbølle. (Christen Christensen and Anne Pedersdatter). She is also in the 1834 census of Simmerbølle, aged 6, with parents and a number of siblings.
http://www.arkivalieronline.dk/default.aspx - now, if you look here for Simmerbølle records you can find Peder Christan Andersen's christening, although I find these records very hard to read so perhaps we should bring bits of them over here to get help with the handwriting. Unfortunately marriage records don't seem to be available over there for Simmerbølle - hopefully you'll find them in Stoense. Be aware that the birth records are separated into boys and girls, and that there are sometimes also additional records for things like people entering and leaving a parish.
Jørgine Christensen is in the 1880 census of Rudkøbing Købstad, widowed, along with son in law Rasmus Hansen Pedersen, daughter Ane Maria Andersen, and what appears to be three grandchildren (only two of these might be the children of Rasmus Hansen Pedersen and Ane Maria Andersen, it's tricky to tell).
For emigration records, look at: http://www.emiarch.dk/search.php3?l=en
